Read More	Range ledger Pioneer Woman of Western Country Died Saturday Mrs. Elwin Aaron Cross,of Green Knoll,passed away at house of grandson in Hugo Mrs. Elwin Aaron Cross a resident of Southern Lincoln County since 1917 and a pioneer woman of the western country for more than three score years, died at the home of her grandson, Wilfred A, Stogsdill, in East Hugo, last Saturday morning at 3:30 o'clock Mrs Cross had been suffering for years with asthma and coupled with this ailment she suffered a fractured hip when she fell at her home at Green Knoll while tending some lambs during a rain in June of last year. She recovered from this mishap and was able to be about. She became quite ill last Friday and was brought to Hugo that evening by her son-in-law A.H. Stogsdill. It was not thought her condition was critical, but she suffered a relapse in the early hours Saturday morning and passed away. Nettie Jane Jenkins, born April 28, 1863 at Jamesville, Minn. and was 73 years 3 months and 24 days old. When but 7 years old she came with her parents to Beloit, Mitchell County Kansas in an oxen team, crossing the Missouri River at St. Joe, Mo. That was in the early seventies when there was but few buildings at Beloit and freighting was done from Marysville and Concordia. She recalled seeing a long line of Buffalo along the Solomon River from 9'oclock in the morning until the sundown and there was still some Indians in the country. Deer, antelope and elk were numerous then In 188o she was married to Elwin Aaron Cross at Beloit. Two years later they moved to Wilson, Ellsworth County and 1901 moved to Gray County in that state. Here they lived until 1917 when the family moved to southern Lincoln County in the community known as Green Knoll. She lived in the state of Kansas for almost a half century without leaving the state and was one of the pioneers going through all the hardships of pioneering in a western country. As she often remarked she went into Kansas on a covered wagon, stayed there for over 47 years and migrated to Colorado, entering the state at Holly, Colo, in a Ford car. Her husband passed away in 1924. Four of their ten children survive: Lucius W. Ingels, Kansas; Sara V. Stogsdill Karval, Colo; Daniel H. Cross Russell, Kansas; and Elwin Aaron Cross Jr. Green Knoll, Colo. Two brothers and four sisters also survive: Lydia M. Jenkins and Ella M. Reist, Beloit, Kansas; Anna A. Lee, Denver, Colo; Mary F. Waterbury, Yakima, Washington; Isiah L. Jenkins, Beloit, Kansas and George W. Jenkins, Ingels, Kansas. Daniel H. Jenkins, a brother,who was a cook in the trail outfits from Texas to Kansas in the early days died in Ordway three years ago. Her other brothers were also on cattle and sheep drives and were well known to Kansas and Colo. outfits. The passing of Mrs. Cross will be mourned by many. After her husband's death she moved from the homestead and had been staying with her youngest son at Green Knoll, who has cared for her during her years of affliction. Two months ago, Mrs. Lee, a sister, came down from Denver, and had been assisting in caring for her during her recent illness. She was a kind and affectionate woman, ever loyal and faithful to her children and a kind and loveable neighbor in the community.Not only the pioneer folks down in Kansas but those close and dear to her in the southern part of the county will learn with deepest sorrow of her unexpected passing. The body was taken in charge by the Carpenter Mortuary. Funeral services were conducted from the Sand Arroya Church Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Rich, the Nazarene minister officiating. Burial was made at the Sand Arroya Cemetery. The church was crowded to overflowing with people who came to pay their last measure of respect and esteem to the beloved departed woman. Profound sympathy goes out to the bereaved children and other relatives in their hour of sorrow.
