Nettie—who saved her wedding presents in their original tissue paper and became miffed if people didn't appreciate her personal touches on gift packages—passed away early Sunday in her sleep. With a smile on her face. "Death was what she wanted," said her friend, Freda Morris of Kirkland, who managed the Williams Apartments where Nettie lived for years and was beloved in the neighborhood. "She was more than willing to join her husband, Jack." Added Nettie's niece, Kathryn Williams of Seattle, "If she could say anything now it would be that it was a pity she couldn't go 10 years ago. But lest anyone think Nettie was a long-time, bed-ridden misery, let it be known the little bit of a woman with the radiant aura cared for herself and negotiated a flight and half of stairs every day until last August. That was before she moved to the Hearthstone Heath Center in Seattle where she died. Living on Lake Street in downtown Kirkland since 1954, Nettie would slip down to the Happy Clam Restaurant where waitress Virginia Beeler served her supper. Before that Nettie pumped gas at nights at the service station she and Jack owned on one of Ellensburg's most lucrative corners. They pioneered in Fairbanks and Nome in 1900. She taught Jack the Irishman how to chicken farm when they moved to Holmes Point Drive in the Kirkland area the year the stock market crashed. She built furniture and could lay a cement walk. And when she was 7, she trundled across the unpaved Cascade Mountain pass in a covered wagon. Neat as a pin, Nettie was. Kathryn Williams said Nettie had boxes in boxes in boxes with every piece of tissue in gifts for the last 20 years. And neat balls of string. "For instance, I found a handkerchief the other day. To Nettie from Aunt Mary. Goodness, Aunt Mary was an old lady back in 1909." And speaking of packages, Nettie had a knack for decorating them. "Whenever she gave gifts away she always decorated the box with some kind of flower," Williams said. "She'd go out and pick a little branch off a tree or cones at Christmas. "There's one thing that annoyed her—if somebody just ripped open to see what was inside without admiring the package." But Nettie never would be cross with a person. She just smiled to herself whether happy or angry. "She blamed me for stealing a hat one time," Williams said. "When she found it she didn't say a word. Just let it go and not apologize. It was up in her own attic trunk. She just kind of said, hmmmm." Born in Ellensburg in 1876 to a family with five other girls, Nettie was the unflappable one. "Ever a crisis, they all said go to Net," Williams said. Nettie's survivors are another niece, Helen Tesack of San Francisco; grandnephews, John Williams of Cleveland, Ohio, Albert Shaw of Redmond and Howard Shaw of California. Her ashes will be at the Odd Fellow's Cemetery in Ellensburg. There will be no funeral service. "That's part of her character," Williams said. "If I allowed anybody to stand over her grave and say word, she'd haunt me. Nettie would want any remembrances made to the American Heart Association. As for knowing Nettie, Beeler said, "I wouldn't want to go without knowing her." Daily Journal American, June 13, 1978
