Description	:	Neva was the daughter of Coral and Mamie Hickman. She and her brother Earl grew up on their family ranch near Eads, among a large extended family of Hickman relatives. Neva married Robert O. Barrows on December 19, 1927, at Lamar, Colorado. She was 18, he was 21. In the 1930 US Census they were living in Big Bend, Bent County, Colorado with no children. Read More	Neva was the daughter of Coral and Mamie Hickman. She and her brother Earl grew up on their family ranch near Eads, among a large extended family of Hickman relatives. Neva married Robert O. Barrows on December 19, 1927, at Lamar, Colorado. She was 18, he was 21. In the 1930 US Census they were living in Big Bend, Bent County, Colorado with no children. In the 1940 US Census they were living in Eads, Kiowa County, Colorado with son Raymond (age 5). The couple eventually had three children, Raymond Barrows, Sue (Stanberry), and Lucille (Burkhamer). Her second marriage was to Fred Williams. I met Neva in the fall of 1993 while traveling through Eads, CO. I knew my Hickman ancestors had lived in the town and asked if any were still around. Folks directed me to Neva. She was a first cousin of my great grandmother, Ella (Whelan) Bennett. Neva invited me into her home and shared photographs of our ancestors that I'd never seen, as well as stories of her life. I took pictures of her photos with my camera and listened intently to her memories. Her father Coral was a deputy sheriff, and was killed in the line of duty while trying to apprehend bank robbers in 1930. What a sweet lady Neva was, and I will always be grateful for the things she shared with me the day of our visit. Neva suffered from macular degeneration in her old age, and even though her eyesight faded, she stayed busy knitting afghans that she donated, and kept writing letters to her cousins in California. She never gave up, and showed tremendous courage facing the loss of her eyesight. In her letters she mentioned that she had been in Kiowa county her entire life, except for a brief 1 1/2 years away as a young person, and that she lived in her house on Rittgers street for 60 years. She died at Weisbrod Memorial Hospital in Eads., survived by two daughters, a daughter-in-law, 4 grandchildren, a great grandson, and numerous other step relations. She was preceded in death by her son, Raymond Burrows of Roswell, NM.
