Description	:	Coral Hickman was the son of Byard and Eleanor Hickman. Born in Iowa in 1879, he came to Eads as a boy with his parents, walking along with the cows behind their covered wagon. He grew up cowboying with his brothers, Anderson and Ed, and met Teddy Roosevelt when he visited Eastern Colorado for a roundup and rodeo in 1903. In the summer of 1905 26 year old Coral was involved in an accidental shooting that resulted in the death of his friend, Dan Rogers. Apparently Coral had gone fishing with Dan Rogers, H.L. Corder, D.W. France, and others. The group returned to Eads at the end of the day and decided to stop at the town's only saloon for a drink. The liquor flowed and a "friendly scuffle" between Coral and H.L Corder broke out. Coral drew his gun after Corder began to choke him and "dealt him a blow" from the testimony given later. Corder grabbed for the gun and it went off, the bullet hitting Dan Rogers right in the stomach, passing clean through his body. A doctor was summoned and Rogers was sent to Pueblo on the first train the following morning. He died that evening. A week later a jury of six local men ruled the shot accidental, but the town closed the saloon in response. Coral married Mamie Johnson in 1907 and the two settled on a ranch near Eads, where their children Earl, Neva, and Cecil were born. Neva recalled her father liked to wear bib overalls, and always carried a big gold pocket watch. From his WW1 draft card, Coral worked as a farmer. He was tall and of medium build, with blue eyes and red hair. Coral became a Kiowa County undersheriff in the 1920's. He was known as a quiet, serious man and was well respected in town. On March 14th, 1930 a bank in Manter, Kansas was robbed of $4,000. Three men (Clyde Ray, Andrew Halliday, and John Walker) were on the run, headed west in a Model A Ford. The call went out to Kiowa County to intercept them. Deputy Sheriff Coral Hickman and partner Bill Mosher drove a Durant coupe to a spot four miles southeast of Eads to patrol the highway, on the lookout for the Ford. They spotted the suspects as they approached Eads and turned to give chase. The bandits stopped two miles east of Eads and a gun battle ensued. Coral died after facing the bandits down directly, walking towards their car while firing until a bullet struck him down. One of the bandits emerged to deliver several more shots after he lay on the road. Mosher was wounded in the leg. The bandits left the two and sped away. By coincidence, Coral's brother Ed was the first to come upon the scene, finding his brother face down on the highway. Coral was still alive when Ed found him, and reportedly told him "I faced 'em Ed!" before dying. Ed rushed back to town and told Coral's eldest son, "Earl, I have the saddest news you will ever hear. Your father is dead. Those bandits shot him to pieces!". A local telephone operator notified all local towns and a large posse was formed, including seven "air planes". The bandits were apprehended the following day in Kansas, but not before shooting and wounding another deputy. Ed Hickman testified at their trial that Coral was facing the murderers when the first shot hit him, and that the remaining five shots took place after Coral was laying on the ground. The murderers were given the death penalty and were hung at the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City on January 30th, 1931. Coral's gold pocket watch had been struck by one of the bullets, and his widow Mamie kept the watch the rest of her life. Coral left behind his wife, Mamie, and three children, Earl, Neva, and Cecil. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America fraternal order.
