Description	:	Newell Lester Lane, 87, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2016 at NHC Fort Sanders in Knoxville. He was born on May 6, 1928 in the Fair Garden community of Sevier County, the son of John and Ida Hixon Lane. Mr. Lane attended Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a wonderful father to his children and a loving husband to his beloved wife Helen, who preceded him in death in 2005. Read More	Newell Lester Lane, 87, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2016 at NHC Fort Sanders in Knoxville. He was born on May 6, 1928 in the Fair Garden community of Sevier County, the son of John and Ida Hixon Lane. Mr. Lane attended Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a wonderful father to his children and a loving husband to his beloved wife Helen, who preceded him in death in 2005. Mr. Lane was one of the founders of the Oak Ridge Boys Club and served on the original Board of Directors. He also volunteered as a coach for the Boys Club in Oak Ridge during the 50's and 60's. He enjoyed coaching baseball and basketball, giving every child a chance to play for him, regardless of race or religion. His children were told constantly, by former players on Mr. Lanes' teams, of how much they learned from him about not only baseball, but life in general. He and his wife Helen were regular attendees of the Oak Ridge Flea Market, both as vendors and visitors. He enjoyed socializing with friends and strangers and attended the flea market up until 6 months before his death. Mr. Lane retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems in 1990 after 38 years of service, where was an Information Systems Supervisor. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia and Gail, and two sisters and two brothers, Opal Hurst, Johnnie Marie Simpson and Clifton Lane, and Jack Lane. Mr. Lane is survived by one daughter, Connie Lane-Douglas and husband, Noel, of Oak Ridge; and three sons, Newell L. Lane Jr. and wife, Judy, and Steven R. Lane and wife, Rene, all of Oak Ridge, and Scott Lane and wife, Denise, of Clinton. He was a loving grandfather and great grand father to his grandchildren, Michelle Merz, Adam Merz, Brandee Hoglund and husband Erik, Halston Lane and wife Renee, Erin Douglas, Kolbi Sherrod and husband Bryan, Brittney Connelly and husband Victor, Jordan Lane, Bailee Lane, Jackson Lane, David Armstrong and wife Stacey and Stacey Armstrong and his great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Jake, Karsten, Parker, Sydney, and Tyler, He is also survived by cousins, Sue Rolen, Geraldine Parrott, Bart and Earl Lane, all of Sevierville; many nieces and nephews, and special friends of the family, Steve Whaley and his son, Chris, of Atlanta, Al Carter of Oak Ridge and Greg Johnson and his wife, Debbie, of Oak Ridge and Ruby Whaley of Sevierville. The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Mark Johnson of Powell for the many years of excellent care given to our father. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 15, 2016 from 5 – 7 PM at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will follow at 7:00 PM with Pastors Michael Thompson and Tom Job officiating. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton. In Lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory can be made to Girls Inc., 1798 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830 or the Blankenship Field Alumni Challenge, 401 S.
