Painter Passed Away Tuesday Mrs. Waldo E. Painter, a resident of the Geraldine community for the past 51 years, passed away at a hospital in Great Falls on Tuesday evening Oct. 11. She had been in the hospital only a few days but had been in poor health for the past ten or twelve years. Nina Ora Garrison was born Sept. 1, 1890, at Sodus, Mich., where she spent her early life. She was united in marriage to Waldo E. Painter at Sodus on Dec. 22, 1906. Three years later they came to Montana and Chouteau county. Mr. Painter took up a homestead on the Square Butte where he farmed for many years. They were among the first settlers in the area. The Painters did their part, like all early homesteaders, in community activities to make life a little easier on the open prairies with long distances to town. Mrs. Painter was loved and respected by all who knew her and her passing will be mourned by a large circle of friends throughout the area in which she lived for many years. She is survived by her husband, Waldo E. Painter of Geraldine; six children: Mrs. Louise Audet, Belt; Mrs. Thelma Daily, Seattle; Mrs. Bernadine Fairbanks, Geraldine; Mrs. Rita May, Inverness; and James A. Painter, Downey, Calif. Three children preceded her in death. Two sons, Pvt. LaVerne Painter and Pvt. Dwayne Painter, gave their lives for their country in World War II. Pvt. LaVerne was taken prisoner at the fall of Bataan and was on the death march to Davoa prison camp on Mindano island when their ship was sunk, and Pvt. Dwayne was killed in action on Luzon on May 17, 1945. The daughter, Mrs. Clyde Stipe, of this city, passed away in 1952. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Garrison of Eau Claire, Mich., and Harry Garrison of St. Joseph, Mich.; and other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services are set for Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Geraldine Community Church. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of all in their bereavement.
