NONA GREEN Nona Young, only child of Stephen Young and Tryphena Hunter Young, was born in New York State on November 17, 1850, and passed away at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Grand Island, Nebraska, on May 17, 1943, at the exact age of 92 years and 6 months. Mr. and Mrs. Young moved to Champaign, Ill., when Nona was still a babe. She grew to womanhood here and on Febr. 8, 1871, became the bride of Silas Jasper Green, in a ceremony performed at Hale Chapel, Peoria, Ill. To Mr. and Mrs. Green were born four children, Frank, Leslie, Guy and Grace. In the spring of 1886 Mr. Green brought his family from Illinois to Nebraska and located on a farm south of St. Edward in the Skeedee community. They retired from the farm in 1904 and moved into St. Edward to make their home. Here Mr. Green died in 1927 and the eldest son, Frank, passed away in 1938. After the death of her husband, "Grandma Green" as she was affectionately known to the entire community, lived for many years at the Soldiers and Sailors Home at Grand Island, then spent four years with her daughter and family at Lexington, Nebr. She returned to the Grand Island Home the first of last October and remained there until called to her Eternal Home on Monday of last week. Her earthly life is ended and she now belongs to the ages, but while here on earth she glorified the years given her, by the self denial and courage of her everyday life. In her heart she treasured honor and faith, love and loyalty. Quiet and unassuming in her manner, her life centered about her home and her family and she earned for herself the title of an "ideal wife and mother," a title that is worth more than all the honors that can be heaped upon a person through activity in civic affairs. Mrs. Green was truly a Christian woman, and since early girlhood had been a member of the Methodist church. The last time Mrs. Green attended church here she presented the church with new Hymnals in memory of her departed husband, S. J. Green. Her faith was in God and on His strong arm she leaned. Mr. and Mrs. Green were among those who thought that the training of youth for the battle of life is one of the most blessed ministries of parents. Fortunate, indeed, are children born into a home where a mother's prayers, a father's faith, a Christian atmosphere, the daily reading of the Bible are vital influences, such a home was the Green's. Her last audible words were: "I want to go Home." Eternal rest has come to her as a benediction after a well spent life. Those left behind have the precious memory of a good mother and an adoring grandmother. She is survived by her sons, Leslie, of Cedar Rapids; Guy, of Columbus, whose health does not permit his knowledge of his mother's passing; and her daughter, Mrs. Frank Buck of Lexington. There are 12 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren, to long cherish and profit by her Christian influence. Last rites were held from the Methodist church at two o'clock on Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. James Jones, who read from Psalms 90 and also Romans eight. With Mrs. L. R. Scott at the piano Mrs. Edward Nelson and Mrs. Lewellyn Gustafson sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and "Abide With Me." Interment was made in the Evergreen cemetery, the body borne to its last resting place by Arthur McKay, I. H. Myhre, George Quade, Forrest Long, Eugene Karnes and Charles Shaffer. The escort of honor was composed of E.T. Collins, George Rich, Robert Cumming, Sr., James Cumming, Charles Thomas and George Crosier. Among those out of town who attended the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Buck, of Columbus; Mrs. Orville Franks and Mrs. Milton Buck, of Lexington; Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Green, of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Cornwell and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Nickerson, of Belgrade, and Mrs. Hersie Condreay of Grant. ------obituary St. Edward Advance, May 27, 1943
