Funeral services will be 2:00 PM on Wednesday January 21, 2015, at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton, Nebraska with Deacon Steve Archbold officiating. Burial will be in the St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Crofton, Nebraska. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday at the funeral home. Thompson was born September 4, 1926, in Crofton, Nebraska to Amos and Rose (Noecker) Thompson. He grew up on the family farm 9 miles west of Crofton near Lindy, Nebraska. He attended country school and St. Rose Elementary in Crofton. At the age of 16, Norman and a friend began taking flying lessons in Norfolk, Nebraska and gained his pilot's license a few years later. He graduated from Crofton High School in 1944. He married Lorraine Eckmann on December 27, 1948 in Crofton. After their marriage they moved just south of the home place where Norman helped farm. In the 1950's they moved to San Jose, California for a few years. Norman began working at the Ford Motor Company where he put the radiator on the first Ford Edsel. He moved back to the family farm near Lindy in 1958 and became a 3rd generation farmer. In 1968, Norman began working for Northern Propane and later purchased N & B Gas in Crofton, which became Thompson Propane in 1978. He owned and operated Thompson Propane until his retirement in 1992. Norman enjoyed flying his entire life and owned five different planes, until his hearing loss grounded him in the 1980's. Norman and Lorraine loved to travel in their motorhome, visiting every state in the continental United States including four trips to Alaska. He loved to collect and work on his Studebakers and antique tractors. He was a kind, sweet man who never intentionally hurt anyone and loved his family above all else. Survivors include his four children: Randy (Ellie) Thompson of Redding, California; Karen (Fred) Steffen of Crofton, Nebraska; Jodi (John) Broders of Lindy, Nebraska; and Tara (Tom) Pavlik of Crofton; nine grandchildren: John (Sony) Thompson, Jamie (Lisa) Thompson, Andy Steffen, Spencer Steffen, Christian Steffen, Austin Steffen, Bobbi (Rob) Kopp, Alyssa Pavlik, and Kali Pavlik; five great grandchildren: Enzo, Violet, Miriam, Cambria, and Sloane; brother, Jerry (Helen) Thompson of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters: Laverta (Jack) Lammers of Hartington, Nebraska and Donna Moline of Albany, Oregon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorraine; and son, Danny.
