He died Tuesday morning, January 22, of grip, after a short illness. A Few weeks ago—less than a month—we noted the death of Mr. Starks' wife. They had lived in happy wedlock for more than fifty-four years. Their companionship had been close and constant, and their mutual affection was so strong that Mr. Starks grieved a great deal after the death of his faithful wife. The final summons found him ready and willing to enter the unknown world. Mr. Starks was a believer in Christianity, being of the Adventist persuasion. His life was quiet, unostentatious, upright, honest and helpful. He was highly respected, and was never regarded other than a good citizen. He was born August 5, 1825, at Champion, Clinton county, New York. In 1854 he moved to Illinois and thence to Wisconsin, finally coming to Monticello in 1864 where he continued to reside until death. He was married to Martha Campbell, the good wife who he survived less than a month, at Clinton, New York, in 1846. They were the parents of eight children, six of whom survive. The survivors are Mrs. Alfred Starks, Mrs. W.A. Overing, Sr., Bert, Fred, Eunice and May, all of whom reside at Monticello. The funeral services were conducted at the late residence of the deceased, this afternoon at three o'clock, by Rev. W. M. Lemen, the pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The body rests in Oakwood cemetery beside that of his beloved wife companion. As they were one in life, so are they not divided in death, either by space or time. Publication: Monticello Express October 15, 1896 Golden Wedding Mr.and Mrs. Norman Starks celebrated their fiftieth anniversary of their marriage, at their home, last Thursday evening, the 8th. Many there are who regard Mr. and Mrs. Starks as being but little beyond the prime of life, and who were therefore greatly surprised to learn of their golden wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Starks were married at the early age of 21 and 17 years respectively, making them now but 71 and 67 years old. Mr. Starks was born at Clinton, New York, and his good wife, whose maiden name was Martha Campbell, was born in Canada. They were married at Clinton, but removed to Illinois in 1855. Thence they removed to Wisconsin In 1857, where they lived until they became residents of Monticello, about 30 years ago. The pleasant occasion of their golden wedding was celebrated by the relatives entirely, of whom 36 were present. These included six children, thirteen grand children and two great-grand-children. The only four persons living, who were present at their marriage, fifty years ago, were present and participated In the festivities of last Thursday evening. These were: Mr. and Mrs. S. Calkins, and Messrs. Harry and Nicholas Starks. The golden wedding repast was served upon the table that was used in the spread of the wedding feast. Ancient china, much older than those who ate from it, was used in serving the repast. There was no remarrying of this couple, who have been so long united in the bonds of matrimony, love and friendship. Such a proceeding was deemed superfluous, but a congratulatory address was delivered by a grand-daughter. Miss Ina Overing, who reminded them of the honorable life they had lived, and what pleasure it gave their descendents to unite in this celebration on the week of the golden anniversary of the state which they long ago adopted for their home. In her neat little speech Miss Overing voiced the sentiments of all of those who had gathered to do honor to the good couple, and in conclusion presented them on behalf of .those present as a reminder of the day, the occasion, and the esteem in which they were held, a purse of gold. Then everybody present congratulated them, and everybody who wasn't there feels like doing the same thing. Hello, not my family but researching for someone else.
