The final rites are set for 11 a.m. Saturday in the McColley-Daniel Chapel with Rev. Robert J. Whiteside, Hot Springs, and Rev. Vernon Broughton of the Bethel Lutheran Church, Lead, officiating. Interment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Lead. Island, the son of Harold and Sophia Island, was born Dec. 29, 1903 in Trondheim, Norway. He attended grade and high school in Lead, graduating with the Class of 1922. His record with Homestake started on June 16, 1920 and he worked in both the water and supply departments before transferring to the metallurgical department in August, 1922. He remained in the metallurgical department until his retirement Dec. 31, 1968. He was named foreman of the Homestake assay office on Dec. 1, 1950 and served in that capacity until his retirement. He had been a member of the Homestake Veterans Association since 1942. Island was married Aug. 22, 1924 to the former Constance Marchiando, who survives. Also surviving are two sons David, Cincinnati, Ohio; Donald, Nashville; a sister, Martha Johnson, Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
