Funeral services were conducted from the Spring Creek Lutheran Church with Rev. Daniel Faust officiating. Mrs. Faust was at the organ. Soloist, Mrs. Jack Velure, sang "Jesus, Lover of My Soul:" and "How Great Thou Art." The congregation sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Children of the Heavenly Father." Martin Gaasland was born August 9, 1897 in Meadow Lake Township, Barnes County, the son of Peder and Hannah Gaasland. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith and received his education in the Clark City and Svea schools. He also attended the Dakota Business College in Fargo. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. On July 5, 1945 he married Gertrude Monson in Valley City. They farmed in Prairie Township, LaMoure County for two years and then in Rosebud Township until 1960 when they moved to Hastings. They ran the café there until retiring. Mr. Gaasland was a member of the Elim Evangelical Free Church. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; one son, Robert of Hastings; three daughters: Mrs. LeRoy (Mary Anne) Murray of Minneapolis, MN; Mrs. Kenneth (Phyllis) Mark of Enderlin and Margaret of Fargo; five half brothers Peder, Marion, ND; Edwin, Minneapolis; Harold, Windom, MN; Arne, Bismarck; John, Glenwood, MN; two half sisters: Mrs. Harry (Helen) Van Hal, Marion; Mrs. Ragnvald (Jennie) Molvid, Grenora, ND; three grandchildren and his step-mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Gaasland of Valley City. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two half brothers. Arrangements were by Oliver's Chapel. Published in The Litchville Bulletin, Litchville, N. D., January, 1974.
