Description	:	Ole Torberson was born in Kirstiansund, Norway, in 1838. At an early age he went to Tronheim and worked on the Nidaros Cathedral. In 1865, Ole Torberson and a close friend, Ole Aspen, left Norway with their young wives, and landed in New York. At an early age he went to Tronheim and worked on the Nidaros Cathedral. In 1865, Ole Torberson and a close friend, Ole Aspen, left Norway with their young wives, and landed in New York. Ole Torberson, a carpenter by trade, had worked in the east and came west with his bride. He settled in mid-Iowa, and worked as a cabinet and coffin maker at Oskaloosa, Iowa. Being a restless sort of person, he moved west, settling near LeMars, Iowa, in 1867. Ole Torberson and Ole Aspen decided to go in search of new land. The two young men came up to the Sioux River on the Iowa side. As they crossed the river near what was called the Keep farm, they encountered two men who were coming back east. The two men, Jake Holter and Mr. Ovre, had been out in the Grand Valley and had staked out a claim. They told Ole T. and Ole A. that there was still land to be had out on the prairie. Holter and Ovre preferred more roll¬ing land. Ole T. and Ole A. went on about three more miles and saw what they wanted. Ole T. took claim to 160 acres of land on Section 32, Canton Township, while Ole A. decided to claim land right across the line in Section 7, Highland Township. They could help each other. After looking over this new land, they left to file claims in Vermillion and went back to Iowa to make plans to settle their claims. In early 1869 they both came back with supplies from Sioux City. Ole T. built his home and sent for his wife and small son. She and the son became ill with tuberculosis and died near LeMars, where they are buried. On July 10, 1873, Ole T. married Svanaug Strand who came from Norway with Mrs. Aspen. Svanaug was born in Telemark, Norway. To them were born seven children: Theodore, O'lena B., Sophie, Bernhard Ole, Petrine and In¬geborg (twin girls), and Christian. Sophie, the oldest, mar¬ried Osmund Hustel, and lived in Canton, where they operated a livery stable. Ole Torberson was one of the first to organize the Grand Valley Lutheran Church and was on the first school board of the Grand Valley School. The school has been restored and is now a memorial to rural schools. Ole and Svanaug are buried in Grand Valley Cemetery, rural Canton. They emigrated to the United States in young manhood and young womanhood, the former making the voyage in 1869 and the latter in 1870. Ole Torberson located in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and the Svanoug who later became his wife took up her abode in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Their marriage was celebrated in Lincoln county, South Dakota, in 1873. Mr. Torberson filed on a homestead in Canton township, Lincoln county, and resided thereon throughout the remainder of his life, passing away on the 10th of August, 1908.
