OLIVE LAYMAN Olive Ann Davis Layman, daughter of William Hawkins Davis and Sarah Shuman Davis, was born in Henry county, Iowa, Oct. 21, 1857 and passed away suddenly while visiting in the home of her cousin, Mrs. George Laird, three miles south of Fairfield, Iowa, November 25, 1943 at the age of 86 years, one month and four days. OLIVE LAYMAN Olive Ann Davis Layman, daughter of William Hawkins Davis and Sarah Shuman Davis, was born in Henry county, Iowa, Oct. 21, 1857 and passed away suddenly while visiting in the home of her cousin, Mrs. George Laird, three miles south of Fairfield, Iowa, November 25, 1943 at the age of 86 years, one month and four days. She was united in marriage to Allen T. Layman, March 14, 1883 at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. To this union seven children were born, William A., Merritt, Ore., Erle D., Mt Sterling, Iowa; Olive P. Spees, Selma, Iowa; Carroll J., Batavia, Iowa; Ruth Cockrell and Lloyd L. of Burlington, Iowa. All of whom survive except Frank W. who preceded her to the better land in 1890 at the age of six months. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Wakeeney[sic-WaKeeney], Trego county, Kansas, where they resided about eight years. Returned to Henry county, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa where they remained until 1905, moving to Van Buren county, near Birmingham. Then in 1910 to a farm in Jefferson county, near Libertyville, Iowa. where she remained until 1920 after which she spent the remainder of her life with her children. Her husband preceded her in death on May 6, 1913. Surviving are eleven grandchildren of whom three are in service; nine great grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. Isarelda Ross, Mt. Pleasant, Ia.; Mrs. Minnie Herron, Burchard, Nebr.; Mrs. Mable Mason, Red Cloud, Nebr.; Mrs. Franc Nixon, St. Francis, Kansas; one brother Farlow of Goodland, Kan. Preceded her in death. Also surviving are a number of other relatives and friends. In her early life she taught school in Henry county, Iowa. She united with the Methodist church at an early age and remained a faithful loyal member. She loved the Bible and spent much of her time reading the daily lessons each day. She was a regular attendant and teacher in Sunday school for many years, always interested in her family, friends and neighbors and with worldly affairs. Spending much thought in prayer for her loved ones. A great lover of nature, always caring for flowers and other beauties of nature. Her passing will leave many pleasant memories. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held at the Mt. Zion Methodist church, Libertyville, Iowa at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, 1943, in charge of the Rev. U. S. Smith assisted by the Rev. Clyde Teel. Pallbearers were Frank Williams, Harry Williams, Roy Hill, Charles Booth, Lou Goehring, Leo Porter. Singers were Katherine Pearson, Nellie Davisson, Glenn Pearson, Charles Pearson; accompanist, Mrs. Glenn Pearson. Interment was in Maple Hill cemetery, Birmingham, Iowa. Source: Van Buren Co.
