Olive was the ninth of 11 children, all deceased, including two brothers, Cameron and Walter Young and eight sisters, Minnie, Annettie, Hattie, Ella, Ida, Mabel, Ethel and Grace. Seven children grew to adulthood. Minnie, Ida, Ethel and Grace all passed away under 7 years of age. Olive passed away September 22, 1990 at Melissa Memorial Hospital at the age of 96 years, eight months and nine days. When "Ollie," as she was affectionately known, was about 5 years of age, her parents moved into what is now known as the Burge Motel where James Young was manager. The Hotel was then known as the Olmstead House, later becoming the Sears Hotel after its counterpart in Denver, and still later the Burge Hotel. Her brother Walter was born in the hotel. Some two years later, Ollie and family moved into the large two-story home just across from the Burge Motel at 237 N. Interocean Ave. just south of what was formerly the Wells Realty office. Olive attended elementary school and the first three years of high school in Holyoke, completing her senior year at Industrial Arts High School in Sterling in order to take classes in home economics. Home ec was introduced into the Holyoke schools some two or three years later. It was after high school graduation in 1914 that Olive became interested in teaching, passing her examinations under then County Superintendent of Schools, Charlie Peters. She taught in country schools Morningview, Silverbeam and Liberty a total of five terms. From 1919-1934 and from 1944-1959 Olive taught in the lower grades at the Holyoke Grade School, District 39. Between 1934 and 1944 she taught a total of 10 terms at the schools of Lone Star, Morning Star, Liberty and Grandview. Ollie tells of her first teaching job at District 48 known as the John Sandquist school 12 miles northeast of Holyoke. She was paid $50 a month for nearby Donnelly farm, for $14 a month. She rode a pony called "Black Beauty" to and from school. She was allowed to ride the pony some seven of the 12 miles to Holyoke, whereupon she would turn the pony loose and he would return home by himself. Ollie would then walk the remaining five miles to Holyoke. Olive taught a total of 45 years full time and then was a substitute teacher five more, retiring in 1964. On June 26, 1924, Olive was married to Harry A. Peach in Sterling. They later moved into a home at 203 N. Phelan Avenue, Holyoke, where they resided 61 years until Harry's death on April 28, 1985. No children were born to this union. However, when asked, Olive responded to how many children she had in a firm unhesitating voice, "Hundreds of them," which was literally true. This brings to mind when niece Gwendolyn (Young) Jensen and nephew Clarence Stout were both in her third grade, Olive secretly offered a "reward" of one silver dollar to each of them provided that she wasn't called "Aunt Ollie" at school. Olive became a member of the Royal Neighbors of America in 1915, remaining a continuous member since. She also joined the Holyoke Order of Eastern Star #105 in 1932, serving as Worthy Matron in 1941. She also was on the Holyoke Library Board 15 years. In 1907 Olive became a member of the First Baptist Church of Holyoke at the age of 13. She was the oldest member of some 83 years duration as well as undoubtedly one of the most loyal. Olive's parents joined the same church during 1894, some six years after its inception in 1888. She also sang in the choir about 17 years, teaching Sunday School many of those same years. Olive's only survivors are a niece, Gwen Jensen and three nephews, W.K. Peters, Clyde Peach and Clarence P. Stout. Funeral services were conducted September 25 at the First Baptist Church in Holyoke.
