Olive died September 14, 2016 at Eureka Community Hospital. Olive “Babe” K. Mehlhaff, daughter of Emil and Katie (Hieb) Mehlhaff was born November 22, 1926 three miles south of Eureka on the family homestead. She graduated from Eureka High School with the class of 1944. She then attended Northern State Teachers College and taught school for one year, then moved to Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN where she was employed at Montgomery Ward. After a short time, she decided that she loved life in the countryside more, so she returned to South Dakota to resume teaching. Getting to her “school on the prairie” was often difficult in the era before hard surfaced roads. She was united in marriage to Allen H. Weller on October 12, 1949 in Eureka Reformed Church. After ten years of teaching, Babe turned her interests to the ranch. They purchased their first herd of registered Aberdeen Angus cattle in 1952, and have raised these type of cattle ever since. Babe loved life on the ranch, helping her husband with the grain and cattle operations. Allen and Babe’s plans for the future were to travel if they ever retired, but life was so wonderful on the ranch that they always made their home there and were still currently farming. Babe enjoyed gardening, having a large vegetable and flower garden, with many varieties of annuals and perennials. Her home was seldom without a bouquet of fresh cut flowers. Her family will always remember her as a wonderful cook. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Grateful for having shared Babe’s life is her husband, Allen; son, Patrick Weller; two daughters, Kitty Weller and Melanie Weller; daughter-in-law, Jaci Weller; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Scott Weller, brother, Hilton Mehlhaff and sisters, Nancy Mehlhaff and Norma Fauth. Adapted from Carlsen Funeral Home & Crematory obituary
