Chapin was born in Tyringham,Berkshire Co.,MA November 23,1830 the son of Paul Taft Chapin and Beulah. In 1856 he emigrated to Marshall Co.,IA with his parents settling on a homestead in N. Marshall Co., In 1858 he married Ellen Hundson. To this union two children were born,Jennie and Henry C. Chapin. Mr. Chapin moved to Union Twp.,Hardin Co., in 1859 building a log cabin on their farm SE of Union where they lived until the fall of 1876 when they moved to a farm W. of Union, living there about six years when he moved into the town of Union. Mr. Chapin came to this part with limited circumstances but by judicious management he accumulated a fortune. He was a man of many activities and in 1883 he with others organized the Citizens Bank and became its President, a position he held until a year ago when his son Henry C. took over the position. He has been connected with every movement for the betterment of this town and the surrounding country. In politics Mr. Chapin was a Republican. In 1874 he was elected to the State Legislature from this District. He served as a member of board of supervisors of Hardin County for six years. He was one of the first members of Industry Lodge,No.,225 I.O.O.F. In April of this year Mr. & Mrs. Chapin gave $5,000 to the public school as a memorial to their daughter. Mr. Chapin took a great interest in education, and has for many years has given each graduate of the high school a piece of gold.Two years ago they donated $1,000 to the endowment fund of Grinnell College. Funeral services were held at the home--Rev. W.H. Hickman preached the sermon and was assisted by Rev H.J. Wilkins. Elected State Repressenative in 1894. Member of Board of County Supervisors 6 years,founder of Chapin Library. One of the organizers of Union Citizens Bank.
