No other young man in the last 10 years has given more promise of taking first class leadership in this community than Oliver Atherton. He is sturdy, loyal, brave and wise in all his wide activities and he is kind an thoughtful in his personal relations--a leader of the bar, an outstanding mayor of the town. That death should threaten him just as he is ready for a broad and useful life is one of the mysteries which man cannot understand. ******************************************* The Emporia Gazette, 15 April 1933, Friday ATHERTON DIES FRIDAY NIGHT Former Mayor of Emporia Dies At 7:35 O'clock In Newman Memorial County Hospital THE FUNERAL MONDAY Had Been Sick Several Weeks--Had Long Record of Service to Emporia and Community Oliver T. Atherton, Emporia lawyer and former mayor, died in the Newman Memorial County hospital Friday evening at 7:35 o'clock. Death was caused by pneumonia, which developed Thursday following almost a month's severe sickness from an ear infection. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the First Congregational church. The services will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. George E. Mitchell, and Rev. J. H. J. Rice, pastor emeritus. Burial will be in the Memorial Lawn cemetery. BORN IN EMPORIA IN 1890 Oliver T. Atherton was the son of the late J. J. Atherton and Mrs. Atherton. He was born in Emporia on December 2, 1890. His father, who came to Emporia in 1870, died in 1902, and his mother, who came here in 1871, still is a resident of Emporia. His father, half English and half Welsh, by marrying a Welsh woman and living among the Welsh, usually was called a Welshman. J. J. Atherton served the city as a member of the council from the second ward for two terms and was superintendent of the water works several years. Oliver Atherton attended Emporia High school and the old Lewis academy, and after working a year as a reporter for The Gazette, he went to the College of Emporia and to Lawrence where he was graduated from the law school of the University of Kansas in 1914. Returning to Emporia, he formed a partnership with W. L. Huggins and practiced law for a few years. Mr. Atherton served a year and a half in the World war. He enlisted in 1917 in Company C, 117th Ammunition Train, an organization formed at Dodge City, which became a part of the Rainbow Division. After a few weeks in Dodge City and while the company was on its way to Camp Mills, Long Island, Atherton and a boyhood friend, William Weyler, who had enlisted with him, were transferred to an officer's training camp, as a result of their application for service immediately after war was declared. While attending the training camp, he was carried on the roll as an enlisted man in Company L, 137th Infantry, the Emporia company. He was commissioned a second lieutenant at Fort Sheridan and was later transferred to the training camps at Camp Sherman, Ohio, and Camp Hannock, Georgia, at which place he was stationed at the close of the war. After the war, Mr. Atherton became a member of the Homer J. Ball post of the American Legion and was active in that organization, especially in the earlier years of its existence. After the war, Mr. Atherton again took up the practice of law in Emporia. Soon he received an appointment as assistant general attorney for the M-K-T railway and he moved to Parsons where he lived for 2 1/2 years. The death of H. E. Ganse had left a vacancy in the firm of Hamer and Ganse and Mr. Atherton returned in October 1922 to Emporia to enter a partnership with Robert M. Hamer. Following the death of Mr. Hamer and the return of W. L. Huggins from New York, where he had been for several years, Mr. Atherton resumed the practice of law in Emporia and the firm again became Huggins and Atherton. A few years ago this partnership was dissolved and later Mr. Atherton formed a law partnership with E. H. Rees, which still was in force at the time of Mr. Atherton's death. MANY OTHER INTERESTS Mr. Atherton had many other business and social connections in Emporia. He had been vice president of the Columbia Building and Loan association since its organization in 1927 and he had served as one of its directors and as its attorney during these years. He also was attorney for the board of education. He was a member of three Masonic bodies, the Blue lodge, the Chapter and the Temple. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary club, of which he was president in 1928; the Current club and the First Congregational church. Mr. Atherton was elected president of the Current club for the following year. He always had enjoyed the meetings of this club and while in Parsons he organized a similar club in that town. When the men of the Congregational church organized a Men's club last January, Mr. Atherton was chosen as its president. Mr. Atherton was a former mayor of Emporia, ending his 3-year term in April 1929. He did not run for a second term. His term was marked by the material progress of Emporia. During his administration a new flow line was built from the reservoir to Emporia at a cost of $100,000. A subway under the Santa Fe tracks at Mechanic street was arranged for before he left office and a storm sewer to take care of the business district drainage was built. The work of beautifying Soden's Grove was begun and during his administration the city received as a gift, the tract now known as Peter Pan park. Another tract of land on the north edge of Emporia, known as Hammond park, was acquired during his administration, a gift of the Rotary club. During his term, almost five miles of streets were paved and almost four miles were graveled. MARRIED IN 1918 Mr. Atherton was married July 14, 1918, to Miss Helen Jones, of Emporia. Three children were born. They are Dorothy Helen, 12; Betty Anne, 10, and John Griffith, 7 years old. His widow and children survive. He also is survived by his mother, Mrs. J. J. Atherton, and one sister, Miss Sarah Atherton, 828 Exchange. Same edition: OLIVER ATHERTON When death comes to the young he brings only sorrow. Death to the old brings relief sometimes, and peace, with grief but a part of his burden. The sorrow that came when Oliver Atherton died last night touched the whole town, the community, the county, hundreds of his young friends all over Kansas. For he was destined to be our coming man. His life's preparation was over. Smoothed sailing loomed ahead. Prosperous, happy, useful, he was ready to go and go far. He Had served this community in many ways, as leader in every organization that he touched, the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, the Congregational church, the Columbia Building & Loan association, the Legion, the Republican party, and as mayor of his town. And in his early 40s he lays down all this leadership and goes from a family that he loved, and from friends who cherished him. There is no answer to the throbbing question that beats upon the human heart in a time like this. ******************************************* The Emporia Gazette, 18 April 1933, Monday WELSH HYMN AT GRAVE Services at the grave for Oliver T. Atherton in Memorial Lawn cemetery Monday afternoon, were featured by the "Welsh Resurrection Hymn," sung by a choir of about 25 Welsh friends of the Atherton family. Arrangements for the choir were made by R. C. Williams. The service at the grave, which followed the service in the First Congregational church, was in charge of the Rev. W. H. Mitchell. Taps was sounded on a bugle by Carl Brogan, with an echo effect by John Dunsworth. Among those from out-of-town who attended the funeral and whose names were not mentioned in Monday's Gazette included Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Brown and daughter, Beverly, of Parsons; W. H. Hamer, of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. David Evans and William Weyler, of Kansas City. *********************************************
