Johnston son of Everett and Christina Johnston was born at the old home one mile west of Bidwell, Wapello Co., Iowa, Oct. 9, 1862, his age being 58 years, three months and eight days. He passed to the great beyond Feb. 8, 1920, with a smile on his face. He was united in marriage on Oct. 9, 1892 to Julia E. Van Fossan of High Point. Rev. H.D. Crawford officiating. To this union were born six children. Alta E. Patrick of High Point, William E. Johnston of Zion, Elmer E. Johnston, Mary E. Johnston, Harold LaRue Johnston and Orville W. Johnston of Bidwell. Three great grandchildren, Ernest and Harold Patrick and Irene Johnston. He was a very kind and affectionate husband and father. He leaves to mourn his demise besides his devoted wife; two brothers, B. Frank Johnston and W. Scott Johnston of Bidwell and mother Christina A. Johnson, who will be 81 years of age March 29, 1920 and a large member of other relatives and friends. He was converted and united with the Pleasant Home church several years ago. Omer was a man with many noble qualities and was held in high esteem by all that knew him. He was also a man with great ambition which was proven by his wonderful success as a farmer and a helpful citizen. By his untiring effort and the assistance of his esteemable wife they became the possessors of good land one mile south of Bidwell. He was informed on the current events of the day and was a life long reader of his favorite paper the Ottumwa Carrier. The funeral services were held at the family residence Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Isaac Dowling of the Christin church of South Ottumwa. The floral offerings are very beautiful. Notwithstanding the bad conditon of the highways the attendance was large. The pallbearers were James Knox, Henry Vandello, Willard Van Fossan, Edward Emanuel, William Suttle and Lewis Kosman.
