Hefners To Note 50th Anniversary Tuesday By Pat Collar, Lima News Staff Writer LAFAYETTE - A golden wedding will be celebrated in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hefner Tuesday. The couple, who lives on Rt. 2, Lafayette, plans to celebrate quietly with a family dinner in the evening. Present at the dinner will be all four sons of the Hefners, and their families. Hefner, a farmer all of his life, is proud of the fact that all of his sons are farmers, and all farm together. J. W. Hefner and Ora Fetter were married April 21, 1909 at the home of Mrs. Hefner in Bath Township. They began housekeeping, shortly after their marriage, on the farm where they now live. The only "big" trip they have ever taken was to Texas 10 years ago, when they visited their foster son. Hefner is retired now, but still helps his sons with their farm work. He likes to walk back to his timber. Trees and nature fascinate him, and he spends a great deal of time trimming the trees and planting new ones. On the home farm, Hefner has 26 acres of timber. He continually plants new trees, mostly pines, multiflora rose, walnut trees and osage orange, which is used for fence posts. He has always hoped that someday each of his sons would own their own farm, and that there would be a good sized piece of timber on the farms. His dream is coming true for each son does own some land, and Hefner says that before long there will be some timber on each farm. Trees are more than hunks of wood to Hefner; they are a living wonder to him. He watches their growth from the time he plants them until they are full grown. He has a friend in the forestry department who has taught him many things about trees and their development. Among the trees on the Hefner farm are several maple one. J. W. and his sons made syrup 50 years ago and they made it this year. The women in the family clear the syrup and can it for their own use. They have their own camp and made between 50 and 60 gallons. Both of the Hefners are active member of the E and R United Church of Christ, located between Lafayette and Lima. J. W. has been an elder in the church for 25 years. Mrs. Hefner has been secretary of the Women's Missionary Guild of the church for 10 years. Mrs. Hefner is a member of the Happy Hour Farm Women's Club, and her husband is a 50-year member of the Auglaize Grange. The Hefners' four sons, Bryan, Raymond, Clark and Herbert, all live on Rt. 2, Lafayette. They have one foster son, Dwight Holman of Dallas, Tex., and 11 grandchildren. Their only daughter, Christine, died in 1945. J. W. has two brothers living: Harvey of Greenville and Robert of Oxford, and two sisters, Mrs. Ollie Long of Ada and Mrs. Tillie Severns of Lima. Mrs. Hefner has three brothers living, George A. Fetter of California, Wilbur Fetter of Rt. 2, Lafayette, and Ira D. Fetter of Lima and one sister, Mrs. Erma Herron of Cairo. Her step-mother, Mrs. Margaret Fetter, lives in Lima. Hefner, who has always done a general line of farming including grain and livestock, believes that there is a definite future on the farm for any young man who is willing to work. Born Sept. 29, 1889, in Allen County, she was the daughter of G. R. and Nancy Hefner Fetter. She married Jesse Hefner and he died Aug. 4, 1969. Surviving are four sons, Bryan Hefner of 640 N. Cool, J. Raymond Hefner of 5025 Reservoir Rd., Clark Hefner of 7036 Harding Highway and Herbert of East Liberty; a foster son, Dwight Holman of Dallas, Tex.; three brothers, George A. Fetter of Kernville, Calif., W. A. Fetter of 2145 N. Dixie, and Ira Fetter of Port Charlotte, Fla.; one sister, Erma Herron of Cairo; 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was a member of Heidelberg Church and the Auglaize Grange Happy Hour Club. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Lewis Memorial Chapel of Chiles and Sons-Laman.
