Cooney, resident of Villisca and vicinity all the 53 years of her life, ended her life by drinking poison at her home here shortly after 6 a.m. Friday. The act was attributed to ill health. She had previously indicated she feared she could not stand the stain she was undergoing and would take her life, and as precaution available agencies in the Cooney home which might be used for that purpose were removed so that she would not have access to them. However a small bottle of black leaf 40, a virulent poison purchased last spring for use in spraying flowers, was overlooked and she accomplished her purpose by drinking less than a teaspoon full of it. Miss Cooney did not eat breakfast with the other members of the family Friday, and after she had taken the poison she calmly announced what she had done and that a physician could be called if the family wished, but that it would be of no use. Dr. J. C. Cooper was summoned and hurried to the Cooney home and was pumping out the contents of Miss Cooney’s stomach, but she died before any relief could be given, so quick action is the poison which she drank. She lived only about ten minutes after taking the poison. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the Rev. W. F. Clayburg, pastor of the church, in charge assisted by the Rev. L. B. Carpenter. Interment was in the Nodaway Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Means, Mrs. Harold Everett, and Roy Means sang at the last rites, accompanied by Mrs. J. L. Wheeler at the pipe organ. Pall bearers were J. F. Taylor, J. L. Wheeler, Joe Mason, Collins Moore, Ratio Strain, and W. A. Lake. Orphan A. Cooney, daughter of Thomas Cooney and Mary Francis Crane, was born May 18, 1882, on a farm six miles northeast of Villisca. While a child she made her home with her Grandmother Crane who lived alone on that same farm. In 1905, when her grandmother died, Orphan came to Villisca to live with her parents who had left their farm in 1904. For a few years after coming to Villisca she worked as a nurse, but when her mother’s health failed, she devoted her entire time to taking care of her parent. She leaves her parents of Villisca, and one sister, Mrs. Dan Pierce, residing northeast of here. one brother, Des Cooney of Glenwood, and two nephews, John Thos.
