Read More	MONTGOMERY COUNTY’S OLDES RESIDENT DIES TOM COONEY, 103, PASSES IN SLEEP TUESDAY MORNING Tom Cooney, life long resident of Villisca and Montgomery County’s oldest citizen died in his sleep early Tuesday morning at the age of 103. Mr. Cooney enjoyed exceptionally good health right up to the time of his death, and only the day before was able to be out in the yard and do most of the things he had been accustomed to doing for years. Even the oldest residents of our community are able to remember Tom only as a man past 50, but old and young alike also remember him for his exceptional memory of early day Villisca and his friendly disposition. It was Tom’s belief that he should get out of the house and move about whenever it was possible if he expected to remain active. but in the days that he was confined to the house, he would sit by a large window on the east and welcome visitors who would come and go each day. Mr. Cooney is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Dan Pierce and several grandchildren. Mrs. Cooney died in April 1943. Funeral services will be held at the Wolfe Funeral Home at 2:00 at the Villisca Methodist Church. Pall bearers will be Lewis Gourley, Walter Gourley, Lynn Hull, Morris Wendling, Grover Holt, and Judd Means. Tom Cooney was born in Washington, Pennsylvania on June 11, 1856 and came to Montgomery County the next year in a covered wagon. Many were the tales he could tell of life in this area in the early days, even before Villisca was founded. Villisca Review, Thursday, October 29, 1959, page 1 Thomas Cooney, son of Jedediah and Nancy Cooney, was born in Washington, Pennsylvania on June 11, 1856 and passed away at his home in Villisca, Iowa on October 27, 1959. He was 103 years of age. When he was 11 months old, he came with his family to Montgomery County, Iowa. The family came by boat down the Ohio River to the Mississippi, then up the river to St. Joesph, Missouri and overland to Montgomery County. They arrived here May 17, 1857 and made their home in a log cabin about 3 miles northeast of the present town of Villisca. As a young man Tom worked on neighboring farms until he was old enough to start farming for himself. Along with his farm operations, he worked at the carpenter trade. In 1903, he moved into Villisca, where for many years he devoted his time to carpenter work, until advancing years made it necessary for him to retire. On December 20, 1878 he was united in marriage to Mary Francis Crane. Four children were born to them; Gertrude, who died at the age of three; Orphan, who passed away November 1936; Ves who died in June 1945; and Annie Pierce, who survives. mrs. Cooney passed away in April 1943. Besides his daughter, he is survived by two grandsons, John Thomas Cooney of Luverne, Minnesota, and James Pierce of near Villisca; two cousins, Fletcher and Joe Gourley; also by five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Tom’s 100th birthday on June 11, 1956, was the occasion of a community wide celebration, “Tom Cooney Day”. There was a free lunch in the city park and a program featuring a concert by the Villisca High School Band and an address; as Villisca honored it’ older citizen on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Was seen on the street a few days before he died. Four known children were born to them, Gertrude, Sylvester, Orpha, and Anna. He was buried October 29, 1959 in the Nodaway Cemetery, Bradley Wolfe in charge of arrangements.
