He was a son of Nancy Murray. Nancy lived with her parents, Samuel and Elizabeth Murray, and remained in their household until after the death of Samuel. When Samuel's will was read in court, leaving the land to his sons and bequeaths to his daughters with instructions as to how they would be paid. Orten and Electa Murray also lived in Samuel's Household. After the property had been distributed, Nancy, Electa and Theotes moved onto another piece of property by themselves, Orten was now on his own and on 27th of October 1862, he enlisted in the 9th Ohio Cavalry in Washington County, Ohio. He spent the next year in Zanesville, and his records indicate his time there was nearly all in confinement, sick in the hospital at Camp Dennison. One year later he was discharged having spent all his time hospitalized with what today would be deemed "strep throat" resulting in a "thickening of mitral valve of the heart". Upon his release it appears that Orten moved from Ohio to Marion, Linn County, Iowa where his mother Nancy, his grandmother Elizabeth, and sister, Electa, and brother Theotes now lived (or joined them soon after. The exact date of move to Iowa is unknown but most likely 1863. Unfortunately Orten did not live much longer after arriving in Iowa. He died 25 May 1867.
