Description	:	Orville Poppe was born on Jan. 8, 1929 in Cook, Neb. He was the oldest of six children born to Otto and Elva Lipps Poppe. Orville was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cook on March 3, 1929. When Orville was three the family moved to a farm northwest of Grant, Neb. where he grew up and attended country school. He was the oldest of six children born to Otto and Elva Lipps Poppe. Orville was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cook on March 3, 1929. When Orville was three the family moved to a farm northwest of Grant, Neb. where he grew up and attended country school. He was confirmed at Grant Zion Lutheran Church on May 30, 1943. Orville attended Perkins County High School and graduated with the class of 1946. During high school Orville played football, basketball, and American Legion baseball. He later played town team baseball with the Zion team. Orville was married to Marilyn Keyes in York, Neb. on Nov. 12, 1950. They moved to Perkins County and lived northwest of Grant. Orville was involved with the Poppe brothers farming operation in Perkins County and in Kansas. Orville and Marilyn moved into Brule, Neb. in 1971 and Orville stayed active with the farm. They also managed the Husky Malt Shop in Brule for five years. In February of 2012 they moved to Westview Retirement in Grant to be closer to family. Because of declining health they moved to North Platte in October of 2014. Orville had moved to Centennial Park Retirement Village in January and had been admitted to Great Plains Health where he died on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015. He had reached the age of 86. Orville had been active in the Brule community. He belonged to the Lions Club and the Brule Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Orville had served on the Brule School Board for 12 years and was able to present diplomas to his daughters when they graduated. He also served the area as an “assistant” to Santa Claus during the Christmas season. In addition to his parents, Orville was preceded in death by two brothers: infant Harold and Lawrence. He is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Marilyn; one son, Merle (Christine) of Grant; two daughters: Brenda (Bob) Kiolbasa of Grant and Linda (Dave) Lakey of Imperial, Neb.; six grandchildren: Dena Siedenburg, Shaun (Desiree’) Poppe, Scott and Eric Lakey, Emily and Allison Kiolbasa; five great-grandchildren; two brothers: LaVern (Wanda) Poppe of Grant and Eldon (Mary Ann) Poppe of Lincoln, Neb.; his sister, Elva Jean (Byron) Richard of Westminster, Colo.; sister-in-law, Joyce Schmitt of Cozad, Neb.; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the Brule St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Jon Dickmander, officiating. Burial in the Brule Cemetery. Bullock-Long Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
