Swedlund Oscar Luther Swedlund was born April 28, 1873, in a log house six miles southeast of Stratford. He was the eighth of nine children born to Peter and Mary Swedlund, pioneer Hamilton county settlers. He received his education in the rural schools near his home and at Highland Park college, Des Moines. For six years he taught school in neighborhood schools, then in 1900 moved to Stratford with his parents. He entered the hardware business operated by his brother, Sam Swedlund, and Floyd T. Ferlen. In 1901 the firm of Swedlund Bros. was organized. The partnership continued until August, 1929, when he was compelled to retire because of arthritis, with which he had been afflicted for several years. He was united in marriage to Bertha Williams June 26, 1907. To this union two sons were born: Clifford of Fort Dodge and Leo of Des Moines. He is also survived by his wife, two grandchildren, Nancy and Curtis Swedlund of Fort Dodge; four brothers, Wesley of Boone, Sam, Albert and Charles of Stratford. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Hannah, and one brother, Elick; and a sister and a brother who died in infancy. Mr. Swedlund, as long as his health permitted, was an active participant in church and community affairs. A devout member of the Methodist church, he served as superintendent of the Sunday school for many years and was a member of the church from his boyhood days. He was a director of the board of education for several years, holding the position of president most of the time. While he was a member of the board, the school building was remodeled and an addition built which more than doubled its capacity. Mr. Swedlund will not only be missed by his immediate family but by the many warm friends he had made during his long residence in the Stratford community. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the home and at 2 o'clock in Calvary Methodist church in charge of the pastor the Rev. Warren S. Paige. Two songs, "In the Garden," and "Beyond the Sunset," were sung by Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Kurtz of Knoxville, Iowa, accompanied by Mrs. Robert Dixon at the organ. Following the services, the remains were taken to Oakwood cemetery, north of Stratford, for interment. The pallbearers were: Floyd Swedlund, Earl Swedlund, W.R. Holstrom, A.T. Johnson, Albert Griffith and E.F. Erickson.
