Oscar Stephen was born at Hurley, South Dakota, February 13, 1896, second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Henrich. Some years later the E.S. Henrich family moved to Alton where the children attended St. Mary’s Academy, their father E.S. being an officer and director of the F.M. Slagle & Company. He married Miss Olga Kass of Alton October 1, 1919, who survives, together with their daughter Jean (Mrs. Carl Herman); three sons, Roger, Walter and David, all of Alton; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Dolan of Beresford, South Dakota and Mrs. Florence Hoffman of Alton and brother, George, both of Alton; also by 15 grandchildren. Mr. Henrich gave evidence early in his career of having remarkable ability as a business man, starting as yard manager at Alton for F.M. Slagle & Company. A few years later, with the backing of his father, he took over the Saunders rendering operation at Alton and soon had it on a money making basis. With adequate financial backing he was able to hold the grease and hides produced by the plant until the price was favorable for selling, a weakness in the Saunders operation of the plant. It has expanded over the years until it has become one of the largest and most successful rendering pants in the state, certainly in this part of the state. When the price of grease and oil began to decline some years ago many rendering plants either went out of business or began to charge for their services in picking up dead livestock. Instead of continuing to ship grease and tankage to St. Louis or other soap factories at prices below the profit level, Oscar’s sons--Roger and Walter, built a feed manufacturing plant near the site of the rendering plant, providing a ready market for the rendering plant tankage which is one of the most important ingredients of livestock feed. David joined the firm a few years later. Putting out a feed time, tested by state agricultural colleges the Alton Premium Feed Mill has constantly undersold comparable feeds because of the savings in shipping cost. Mr. Henrich was a veteran of World War I and a 50-year member of the American Legion. Rosary for the deceased member of the St. Mary’s Parish was recited Sunday in the parish hall at 3 and 8 P.M. He and the other members of the family have contributed large sums toward the well being of the parish and the new grade school. He invested quite extensively in Sioux County Land. Before the founding of Spalding High School at Granville he had offered the bishop a site for the school on his farm located on highway 10 between Alton and Granville. The bishop, however, decided not to accept the generous offer. Of the three parishes involved in support of Spalding, Alton, Granville and Hospers, Granville parish is by far the largest in membership. Family and friends will solely miss the keen insight and sound judgment of this valued citizen.
