Slagle and Co. for over 50 years and identified with the earliest beginnings of the Alton community, passed on at his home here late Wednesday afternoon, March 31st. Mr. Henrich was born Jan. 9, 1865 at Enchenberg, France, the son of Jacob and Anna Weyant Henrich. In 1866 he came the United States with his parents and family, crossing the ocean by sail boat. The family located at Burlington, Wisconsin, but in 1878 moved to Alton and located on the farm just east of town now owned by Dr. M. Vander Maaten, purchasing the land from the rail road. The farm home on the place is the one originally built by the Henrich family, who were skilled carpenters. Mr. Henrich, as a boy of 13, assisted his father and brothers who built many of Alton's first homes, business places and churches. He recalled working with them in the erection of the local First Reformed church, at a time when water had to be hauled from the Floyd river. The Henriches also built the original St. Mary's church and the Presbyterian (then Congregational) church. In 1866, after finishing a two year business course at Bloomfield, Iowa, he was employed by F. M. Slagle and Company to manage the lumber yard at Hurley, South Dakota. Sept. 4, at Hurley, he was married to Mary Ellen Murphy. In February, 1901, with Mrs. Henrich and their five children he returned to Alton, Iowa, as auditor and Vice President for F. M. Slagle and Company. Mrs. Henrich preceded her husand in death Feb. 10, 1949, and a granddaughter, Mary Ellen, also preceded him. He is survived by five children: Mrs. J. J. Dolan of Beresford, So. Dak.; Frank E. of Lennox, So. Dak.; Mrs. Florence Hoffman, Oscar S. and George W. of Alton; 18 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; two brothers, Will of Centerville and John of Britton, S.D. Three brothers, Nick, Charles and Sister Verena preceded him in death. A leader in community affairs, Mr. Henrich possessed the ability to "get things done." He was President of the Alton Commercial Club during its period of greatest activity, when the club helped to push through the paving of Main street and several other Alton streets, besides a number of other projects to modernize and improve the town. He was a member of St. Mary's parish, an organizer of the Alton Building and Loan Association, member of the Park Commission, member of the school board for 16 years. He was one of the most enthusiastic members of the Alton Fortnightly Club, early literary and musical club here, was President in his turn and took an active part, contributing many well written papers. With Mrs. Henrich, his gracious wife, he took part in the social life of the town and their hospitable home was the scene of many delightful parties for the married set, and later for the young people while their children were growing up. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at St. Mary's church. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
