Oscar Holding Jul. 31, 1922 - Sept. 22, 2015 Oscar William Hilding, age 93 of Shenandoah, IA passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Elm Heights Nursing Home in Shenandoah. He was born to Sven Leonard "Lee" and Amelia (Peterson) Hilding on July 31, 1922 in Washington Township of Montgomery County, IA. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1940 and enlisted in the US Navy in 1941. Oscar was a survivor of the December 7, 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and saw action in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. In his later years he was frequently invited to share his war experiences as a public speaker. In 1944, he was sent to Naval Officers School at the University of Texas in Austin and received his degree in Business Administration in 1946. After being honorably discharged, he accepted employment with Standard Oil of California, later Chevron, in New Orleans, LA from 1946-1977 and, for a short period, in Spring, TX prior to his retirement. In 1944 Oscar married Loeta Dana Boldra of Thurman, IA, his devoted partner of 40 years until her passing in 1984. After his retirement they briefly resided in Russellville, AR before returning home to Shenandoah, IA in 1981. He was married to Veda Louise Reed Hume on January 2, 1985 in Sidney, IA. Oscar was an avid square dancer and round dancer and a popular caller and instructor, creating several figures that became part of the square dance lexicon. Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Leota Hilding. He is survived by Veda Hilding), his wife of 30 years of Shenandoah, IA; sons, Randy Kent of Fort Pierre, SD and Jerel Lee of Lawrence, KS; 3 grandchildren, Dennis Jozef and wife Shannon, Kristopher Jay, and Cleo Elizabeth. From his marriage to Veda, he acquired four stepchildren, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. l services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, IA with Rev. Jason Gutzmer of the Sidney United Faith Church officiating. Visitation will be open after 5:00 PM with the family greeting friends from 6:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, IA. Interment will be in the Thurman, IA Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by Williams-Jobe-Gibson American Legion Post #128 of Sidney, IA. Memorials will go to the Thurman Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, IA is in charge of arrangements.
