He had partaken in two invasions before this one. Dayton Review December 14, 1944 MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR OSCAR OBERG HELD SUNDAY Memorial services for Corporal Oscar W. Oberg, who was killed by enemy Air Raid in St. Tropez, France, on August 16, were held Sunday afternoon at the Lutheran Church, with the Pastor, Rev. Waldo Ekeberg, officiating. Special music was sung by a men's quartet, consisting of Frank Peterson, Kenneth Youngdale, Richard Will, and Joe Youngstrom. Mrs. Everett Swanson sang, "Come Unto Me When Shadows Darkly Fall." Rev. Ekeberg delivered the Memorial Message. Peterson Post 323, the American Legion, and the Legion Auxiliary attended in a group. At the close of the service the American Flag was presented by the Legion Chaplain, Earl Hedberg, to Mrs. Oberg, mother of Oscar Oberg. The Colors were carried and posted by A.A. Erickson and Clyde Magnuson, Legion Color-bearers. Auxiliary Colors were carried and posted by Mrs. Mary Okey and Mrs. Crystal Peterson. Taps were sounded by Vern Ecklund. Oscar W. Oberg was born in Dayton, Iowa, February 18, 1908 where he spent his entire life with the exception of the last two years. On Aug. 15, 1942 he was called into the service of his country and assigned to an Engineer's Combat Division where he attained the rank of Corporal. After extensive training in various camps in this country he was sent to North Africa in June 1943, and in July of that year took an active part in the invasion of Sicily and later in Italy. On Aug. 15, of this year he was sent to Southern France, where on Aug. 16, the second day of the invasion, he was killed in action, by enemy air rapid at Tropez, France. He was 36 years, 5 months and 15 days old at the time of his death. He attended the Dayton Consolidated School where he graduated with the class of 1926. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in the year 1924. He was preceded in death by his father, one sister, Myrtle, and one brother, Carl. Survivors of his untimely passing are his mother, Mrs. Theolinda Oberg; one brother, Arner F. Oberg; four sisters: Mrs. Anna Nordstrom, Boone, Iowa, Mrs. Olive Quist, Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Mildred Danielson, Newell, Iowa, and Mabel at hoe; three nieces, two nephews and two grand nephews, besides other relatives and a host of friends. He was liked by all for his upright character and his kindly consideration of others.
