US ARMY, WWII Ottis Guinan Huggins, Jr., a member of a prominent family in this area, was born in the Hemingway area of Williamsburg County on July 11, 1922. He was the son of the late Ottis Guinan Huggins, Sr. and Ida Belle Newman Huggins, the grandson of William James Timmons Huggins and the great grandson of George Samuel Briley and Elizabeth Timmons Huggins.He was a retired business man, farmer and owner operator of Huggins Brothers Lumber Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II having served at Camp Beal, California and in the European Theater and was discharged 1 Feb 1949 with the rank of Master Sargent.He was a member of the Johnsonville American Legion. Everyone knew him as Sawman. When he was a little boy, someone asked him what his name was and he responded "Well, I'm the Sawman". His father owned Huggins Brothers Lumber Co. and he had grown up with the saw mill. From that day forward he was known as Sawman. Sandy, Nancy & Jimmy Huggins, his nieces and nephew called him "Uncle Coot". He had nicknames for all of us and his nickname for Sandy, the oldest, was Coot, so she called him Uncle Coot. All close family members know that Saw, Sawman and Uncle Coot are the same person. During his lifetime he silently helped many in the area and never wanted any credit for what he did. He assisted many families in the area and provided a college education for at least 6 children. He is survived by his wife, Mae Witt Huggins, three step-children; Joseph Robert Huggins of Johnsonville, Dorothy Marie Huggins Crawford of Nassau and Martin Witt Huggins of Hemingway; two nieces raised in the home, Nancy Huggins Staton of Kingstree, Sandra Huggins McCaskill of Rock Hill; and a nephew raised in the home, James William (Jimmy) Huggins, Jr. of Kingstree. Funeral services were held in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the family plot in Old Johnsonville Cemetery.
