Huggins, 56, Hemingway businessman and farmer, died at Johnson Memorial Hospital at 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning from injuries sustained about noon Thursday when his car was in a collision with a log truck at Kingsburg nine miles north of Hemingway. Mr. Huggins was returning home from Myrtle Beach, SC. Mr. Huggins was a retired lumberman, having owned and operated the Huggins Brothers Lumber Co. and Mill here for many years with his brother, Klugh Nedo Huggins. The business has been managed by his son, O.G. Huggins, Jr., since his retirement. Funeral services were held at the residence at 4 p.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. H.H. Howard of Hartsville, a former pastor, the Rev. E.B. Johnson and the Rev. George Denton, both of Hemingway. Burial services were held in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery. Mr. Huggins was the son of William James Timmons Huggins and Minnie Pauline Grier Huggins, member of a pioneer family in the Old Johnsonville section here, where he was born and reared. He was a veteran of World War I and served with the Fourth Infantry Division overseas. He was decorated several times for heroism in combat. He was one of the few survivors of his unit in the battle of the Argonne Forest. He was active in the work and public service in his home community. He was a former school principal and teacher at the Muddy Creek School near here. He was an honor graduate of Old Johnsonville School in 1915 and held a law degree. He was a former Trustee of Old Johnsonville School and a member of the Florence County Board of Education. He was a member of the Southern Methodist Church near Hemingway. Mr. Huggins was a member of the American Legion Post in Johnsonville. He was appointed a colonial and served on the staff of Gov. Thurmond during his administration. Active pallbearers were Merrill Brown, J.D. Brown, Billy Gibson, Bobby Gibson, Dr. Herman Singletary, Joe Rogers, Boyd Miller,Jr., and Sam Newman. Honorary pallbearers were Talmadge Eadon, Hal Sams, Clarence Snowden, Jr., Melvin Bishop, George Chandler, R.W. Stuckey, Dr. V.L.Bauer, Dr. J.G. Ulmer, Luther Avant, Henry Wheeler, Judge Frank Eatman, Wallace Connor, Watson Eaddy, Claude C. McDaniel, L.F. Rhem, Dr. John Price and R.D. Cox. Surviving are two sons, O.G. Huggins, Jr. and James William Huggins(June) both of Hemingway; one brother, Klugh Nedo Huggins, six sisters: Mrs J.D. Brown, Mrs W.W. Gibson, Mrs Kenneth Brown, Mrs. Boyd Miller, of Bennettsville and Mrs. T.W. Edgeworth of Biltmore, NC. Three Grandchildren:Sandy, Nancy and Jimmy Huggins and 14 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 24 years, Ida Belle Newman Huggins who died in 1945.
