April 2, 1935 - Carroll Daily Herald - Owen Finnegan, 78 years old, passed away last night at 10 o'clock at the home of his son, Mr and Mrs Joseph Finnegan, at Sioux city, where he had made his home the last year. Mr Finnegan had been in failing health the last few years; but the direct cause of his death was a sudden heart attack suffered Sunday morning followed by pneumonia. The body arrived here early this morning and was taken to the Gregory Funeral Home and then to the home of Mrs. John Finnegan at 209 North Clark street this afternoon. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock in St Lawrence church. The Rev Father Joseph Comes pastor, will officiate at the requiem mass and burial will be in the family lot in the parish cemetery. Born in Ireland Owen was born in Cork county, Ireland and came to America when a young man and located in Illinois for a short time and then came to Carroll county. He was married to Katharine Duffy, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Duffy, Feb 16, 1883 in Our Lady of Mt Carmel church at Mt. Carmel. They lived on a farm near Mt Carmel until 1896 when they moved to a place near Graettinger, IA, which they farmed until 1906. At that time they moved to a farm near Fonda where they lived until 1919 when they retired and came to Carroll to make their home. Mr Finnegan worked for the Standard Oil company for a number of years and later was a flagman at the Main street crossing of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad company until his health failed. Since the death of his wife, he had made his home with his daughter-in-law, Mrs John Finnegan and with is son Joseph Finnegan in Sioux City. Mrs. Finnegan died June 27, 1933. Mr and Mrs Finnegan were the parents of 7 children, five of whom survive. They are Patrick Finnegan of Fonda, Joseph Finnegan of Sioux City, Thomas and William Finnegan of Carroll, and Mrs Jack Buchanan of Libery, IN. John Finnegan, former chief of police, died March 23, 1933, Frank Finnegan died August 1, 1933. Yesterday upon word of the serious illness of Mr Finnegan, his sons, Thomas and William, motored to Sioux City and this morning accompanied the body to Carroll.
