March 23 1933 - Carroll Daily Herald - Carroll today mourned its chief of police, John (Jack) Finnegan, who died this morning at St Anthony hospital, at 5:10 o'clock. Chief Finnegan was taken to the hospital one week ago after he had been ill for sometime. The cause of his death was liver trouble, aggravated by stomach ulcers from which he had been a sufferer for some years. A week ago Monday Chief Finnegan and his son Merle accompanied by Tom Finnegan drove to Sioux City, and took their brother, Joe Finnegan, to his home after he made a visit here with his parents and other relatives. Jack became very sick on the way returning home and was not on duty after that day. He went to the hospital Thursday. For the past week his condition had been critical, slight improvements one day being followed by sinking spells despite the best of medical attention. Mr. Finnegan, 48 years old, had been chief of police of Carroll since 1924, being appointed by Mayor John Haltigan shortly after the Finnegan family moved to this city, and being continued in office by Mayor S.H. Johnston. He was born Nov. 29, 1885, at Fonda. He was married to Miss Laura Quirk at Fonda, Jan. 21, 1913. After living on a farm near there for some years he came to this city and began his career as a city officer. He is survived by his widow; three children, Helen, Alice and Merle; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Finnegan of Carroll; and the followings brothers and a sister: Joe, of Sioux City; Patrick, of Fonda; Tom, Frank and Bill, of Carroll; and Mrs. Jack Buchanan, of Chicago. Mr. Finnegan was a devout member of St. Joseph church. He died well fortified by the last rites of his church. The funeral will be held Saturday morning, at 9 a.m., at St Josephs church with Rev P.T. Lynch reading requiem high mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery here. Chief Finnegan had numberless friends in this city and community. An efficient police officer, his unfailing courtesy and fairness in the duties of his office won him respect and friendship on every hand. There were hundreds of people who felt a personal loss upon hearing of his death. Carroll, located on the main line of a railroad and a principal highway, was the stopping off place for characters of many sorts and the chief had dealings with them in various ways. Present and former city officials today paid him tribute as being one of the best police officers the city has ever known, both in keeping order and in solving crimes of all degrees. Ever since his last illness many inquiries had been made regarding his condition indicating the high regard in which he was held. Mayor Johnston today requested that all business cease in the city during the hour of the funeral Saturday morning.
