She passed away peacefully at her home on July 1, 2015, aged 69. Though diminutive, Pat was alarmingly smart, intuitive and compassionate. She passed away peacefully at her home on July 1, 2015, aged 69. Though diminutive, Pat was alarmingly smart, intuitive and compassionate. In her youth, she participated strongly in 4H projects, with a skilled knack for sewing and baking, often winning purple and blue ribbons. She excelled in education throughout her life, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Butler County Junior College, then attained a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting at ESU, while working at Newman Department store. Upon graduation in 1968, she moved to Chicago, having landed a lucrative job at Motorola. After 7 years there, she returned to Emporia to fulfill the courses required for a Masters’ Degree in Psychology. She worked for over 30 years at Newman Regional Health in Accounting, Personnel, and IT. On the side, she also volunteered as a docent for the Lyon County Historical Museum, and eventually was hired on in that capacity upon her retirement from NRH. She was also a lively member of Community Theatre of Emporia, and bravely took on several challenging roles, most notably playing one of the notorious Brewster sisters in “Arsenic & Old Lace.” She loved learning, music, reading, puzzles, mystery novels, history, gardening and British comedy. She loved to travel, having been to Greece, Italy, England, and Israel, as well as all over the US. She played the guitar annoyingly well after only 3 lessons. Despite all her skills, one New Year’s eve back in the 1990s, the only resolution she knew she could fulfill was to “wear more hats,” and this she did with aplomb. Pat was a devout member of the First Congregational Church in Emporia for many years, and served on the Diaconate. She also assisted Pastor McHenry in jail visitations and worked as a volunteer for the Abundant Harvest. Patricia is survived by her sister, Rita (Jim) Scribner of Emporia; brother, Darel (Jan) of Willow Springs, MO, and brother, Harold (Carla) of Denver, CO; as well as 2 aunts, an uncle, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jerald; and 1 great-niece. Her memorial service will be held Sat., Aug. 22nd, at 1 PM at the First Congregational Church, 326 W. 12th, in Emporia; inurnment will follow at Maplewood Lawns. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to either the David Traylor Zoo or Friends of the Emporia Public Library. Patricia D.
