Patrick John Kennedy, youngest son Michael and Catherine Scully Kennedy was born June 3, 1854, at Blairswood, Penn. Kennedy, aged 86 years, died at his home in Highland Township last Saturday afternoon after an illness of two weeks. Patrick John Kennedy, youngest son Michael and Catherine Scully Kennedy was born June 3, 1854, at Blairswood, Penn. In 1858, the family moved to Iowa making the trip by boat down the Ohio River to Cairo, Ill. , then up the Mississippi to Dubuque. They settled on a farm near Bankston and lived there for 11 years after which they moved to a farm in Highland Township which has been his home for 71 years. With his parents he shared the hardship of pioneer life clearing the soil, plowing and driving to market with oxen, walking to Richardsville to attend the church services since there was no church at Bankston at that time. After moving to Clayton County the deceased hauled wheat to Clayton and McGregor and also Cook’s station before the railroad was built to Elkader. To him work was a joy and he was thankful to be able to perform some daily tasks up to a few months prior to his death. He was a member of St. Joseph’s parish here for 71 years ever faithful and attended church services regularity. Feb. 20, 1878 he was married to Miss Mary Corbeth and to this union six children were born namely, Mary, Julia, Catherine, Martin, Anna and Walter. Theirs’s was a happy home until June, 1889 when the children contracted diphtheria during an epidemic and within three short weeks the mother and four oldest children died leaving only Walter and Anna to stay on in a desolate home with their father. His mother, Mrs. Catherine Kennedy, came to assist him and remained until her death in April, 1902. Since then he and the children kept the home together. EPWORTH HISTORICAL SOCIETY
