Dimmitt, 77, of 800 13th Ave., Monroe, Wis., and formerly of Chillicothe, died at 12:04 p.m., March 16, 1997, at the Monroe Clinic Hospital in Monroe. He was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Farson to Carl Clifford and Etha M. Gardner Dimmitt. He married Velma Louise Sparks on Oct. 15, 1940, in Ottumwa. He served in the Army during World War II in New Guinea, where he received the Purple Heart. Upon returning from WWII, he opened an auto service garage which he ran for two years; he then worked as a mechanic for Bennett Auto Service. He was an employee for John Morrell & Co. for 26 years. After the closing of the plant in 1973, he worked as a butcher at Fareway Food Store. He was a resident of Chillicothe most of his life, having moved to Monroe in February 1995. He was a member of Eddyville Christian Church, a life member of Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and had been a member of Oddfellows. He was mayor of Chillicothe for many years and served as a justice of the peace for 10 years. He is survived by his wife; a son, Dwaine Dimmitt of Monroe; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Don Dimmitt of Eldon, Jim Dimmitt of Chino, Calif., and Dave Dimmitt of Ottumwa; and two sisters, Carolyn Wilkinson of Marshalltown and Mildred Tallman of Minnetonka, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wayne, Ralph, and Bob Dimmitt; and a sister, Dorothy McLaughlin. The body has been cremated. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Ottumwa Cemetery, the Rev. George King of Evangelistic Foursquare Church officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of the American Legion. Memorials may be made to Evangelistic Foursquare Church. Reece Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
