The son of Rene and Nathalie Grammens, he was born Custer, MT. He was raised and educated in the Custer area. Paul entered the Navy in 1942, serving on the USS South Dakota in the South Pacific. He was injured during the battle for Savo island. He was awarded the Naval Commendation for Heroism the Purple Heart. Following his discharge, Paul attended MSU, graduating in 1948. He married Alberta "Birdie" Hofferber at Pompeys Pillar on June 2, 1951. They move to Billings, MT., in 1952. He worked as an instructor for the War Veteran Farm Training program until 1953, when he went to work for Yellowstone County in the assessors office. In 1983, he retired from the county after 30 years. During his time with the county, he serves as assessor for one year and as chief deputy assessor. Paul was a member of St. Pius X Church, Custer American Legion Post 111, DAV, Elks Lodge 394, and was a past member of O.A.K.S. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Grammens Zopfi, his parents and two brothers, Albert and Frank. Survivor include his wife, Alberta "Birdie", his son, Tim, and daughter-in-law, Valerie and grandson Chris of Worden; three brothers, Morris of Powell, WY., Robert and Edward of Custer, MT.; and two sisters -in-law, Maggie Creek, and Esther Frahm of Billings, MT. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday in Michelotti - Sawyers & Nordquits Mortuary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Pius X Church. Interment with military honors will be in Pleasantview Cemetery in Ballantine, MT. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
