Ed was born Jan. 5, 1929, the youngest of six sons born to Nathalie and Rene Grammens, on the family farm where Ed lived his entire life. Ed attended school in Custer, graduating from high school in 1947. Shortly after graduation, Ed married his high school sweetheart and classmate, Rose Ann Ponessa. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Feb. 18, 1950. Ed then began farming on the family farm with his father and two brothers, Frank and Robert. They formed the Grammens Brothers Partnership. Ed farmed for 43 years, retiring in 1989. Ed loved music and played a variety of instruments. He and his classmates formed the Custer Orchestra and played at various towns, namely the Elks Club in Billings at its former location. Ed loved nothing more than being with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved sports, especially basketball, traveling to wherever his children were playing. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Albert, Paul, Frank and Morris. He is survived by his wife, Rose, of 52 years; son Ed (Connie, Brad, Ryan) of Billings; son Allen (Kim, Ashley, Garrett) of Lavina; daughter Marylou Welborn of Custer (Scott, Brian, Cretia, Kiersten, Mikayla of Mapleton, Minn., and Kari and Bryan Buller of Billings); son Bob (Valerie, Kyle, Kristin) of Sheridan, Wyo.; one brother, Robert (Marion) of Custer; four sisters-in-law, Esther Frahm, Birdie Grammens, Mildred Grammens and Maggie (Paul) Creek, all of Billings; and numerous nieces and nephews. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Custer. Interment will be in Custer Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 1144 N. 30th St., Billings, MT 59101, or Custer EMT and Fire Department, or the charity of one's choice. Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
