Paul Brantingham was born in Gates Mills, Ohio, January 22, 1915, to Martin and Lydia Brantingham, who were both Friends ministers. He grew up in the shadow of the church, and spent his life working for his Lord and Savior. One of the most significant things that he was led to do was to establish the Winona Tent Meeting, a tent revival held in a lovely wooded grove in Winona, Ohio. Over the years, it served as a soul saving station to many in that area. Those of the community and his family remember his faithfulness over the continuance of the tent meeting, his faithfulness over his responsibilities as a local church leader, his faithfulness to the Lord during the death of his wife Jeanne Wright Brantingham in 1948, and his faithfulness to his five sons. What Satan had intended to be the end for his family, God intended to be the beginning. Paul, moved in the strength of the Lord, and turning from all that was secure to that which was adventuresome, began to prepare for the professional ministry at Cleveland Bible College. His life has been an example of faith. He simply obeyed God, and God accounted it to him for righteousness. Out of that act of obedience God turned his sorrow into joy, and gave him a new wife, Ellen Haas, and two additional children, a son and a daughter. This was the beginning of a long line of successful pastorates weaving from Winona, through Tecumseh, Michigan, Paris, Tennessee, and Martinsville, Virginia, where he retired in 1982. His faith lives on in hundreds of lives who were found by his persistence, who were understood by his empathy, who were encouraged by his example, and who were comforted by his humility. His daughter and sons did not rise up and invest their lives in the church by accident. Those on the Malone College Board and the E. P. and E. Board were the recipients of his practical wisdom and reserved judgement. He seldom spoke, but when he did, careful attention was given to his insights. It is difficult to think about his life without thinking about the church. When he was dying, he was asked whether he had fulfilled all of his dreams. He responded hesitantly: "Not yet. If I had some more time, I would like to spend it encouraging the churches." He died on the last night of Yearly Meeting, August 16, 1984. The service was held at Martinsville, August 18, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Dennis Mote, and area superintendent, Rev. Milton Leidig. On Monday morning, August 20, a second memorial service was held at Winona, conducted by Dr. Robert Hess, general superintendent [of Ohio Yearly Meeting], and the pastor Rev. David Smith. More than a quarter century of scenes floated through my mind the Monday after Yearly Meeting as Marge, my parents and I drove through the sparkling pastoral hills of Columbiana County, Ohio. The floating scenes were interrupted from time to time by quiet conversation as we recalled the years we had known Paul Brantingham, describing and rediscovering the significance of his ministry to us. I found myself thinking ahead to he time of sharing that is usually a part of memorial services held in Friends Churches. Which of the significant memories should I share? Would others remember and share similar experiences? As the sharing began, it was quickly apparent that the Holy Spirit had stirred the memory of many Friends to recall how the Lord's presence in Paul's life had made him a blessing to others. Some shared concerning Paul's gift of encouragement; others mentioned his vision; while others described his keen sense of the importance of family ties. Paul Brantingham influenced my life most of all through his gift of encouragement. During my teenage years, Pastor Brantingham was a significant influence in my life. His encouragement often was expressed by his interest in the activities of my life. I can recall him coming to sporting events in which I was a participant. He even came to watch a few of my wrestling meets, a sport which I know he had little or no interest in. During those years he encouraged me most of all by recognizing me as a person and by talking with me in a way that made me feel that my opinions and thought had meaning and value. Paul had the gift of seeing what, through God's grace, and individual could become. This made him effective at reaching people of all social strata for Christ. Through his friendship and encouragement folks ranging from social outcasts to corporate leaders learned the love of Christ.
