Description	:	PILOT MOUNTAIN, NC ~ Mr. Paul Reid Covington Sr., 93, of Brown Mountain Road, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, after being hospitalized at Forsyth Medical Center for eight days. Read More	PILOT MOUNTAIN, NC ~ Mr. Paul Reid Covington Sr., 93, of Brown Mountain Road, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, after being hospitalized at Forsyth Medical Center for eight days. He was born in Stokes County to the late E.A. and Daisy Boyles Covington on Aug. 15, 1917. Mr. Covington graduated from Nancy Reynolds High School in 1934. He joined Brims Grove Baptist Church when he was 11 years old. In the early 1950s, he moved his membership to Brown Mountain Baptist Church where he has served as an active member and deacon for over 50 years. He was a life-long farmer and business man. He retired in the early 1990s when he sold his interest in the New Madison Tobacco Warehouse in Madison. He was very active after his retirement. He loved his family, gardening, his church, his neighbors, gospel music and the Lord. He was 88 years old when he last cut and baled the hay on his farm. At the time of his death, Mr. Covington was the oldest deacon of Brown Mountain Baptist Church and a member of the Pilot Mountain Masonic Lodge #493. He joined the Masonic on June 7, 1962. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Covington Turney and husband Jimmie R. Turney of Pilot Mountain; sons and daughter-in-law: Paul Reid Covington Jr. and wife Lana Simmons Covington of Westfield and Hugh Covington of Pilot Mountain; grandchildren: Lisa Turney, Michele Turney Faries (Jon), Shelley Covington Anderson (David), Brook Covington El Hachmi (Oussa), Colin Covington and Talia Covington Greene (Chris); great-grandchildren: Samuel Faries, Gavin Anderson, Luke Anderson, Cortland Wilmoth and Jada Covington; brother-in-law, Larry Smith and wife Becky; sister-in-law, Vernelle S. Hunter; special nieces: Jane C. Needham (Bill) and Sue C. Lackey; special nephew, Thomas A. (Tommy) Covington and wife Becky; special friends, Gray and Rosie Holder; and special pets, Chelsea and Gracie. In addition to his parents, Mr. Covington was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Smith Covington; sister, Irene C. Shumaker; brothers: Oliver Covington, Carl Covington, Samuel P. (Sam) Covington and J.T. (Tom) Covington; and great-grandson, Jonathan Reid Faries. Funeral service will be held on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Brown Mountain Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Eddie Carter, the Rev. Julius Bradshaw and the Rev. Rick Sewell with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Covington will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Howell-Nelson Funeral Service of Pilot Mountain. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Brown Mountain Baptist Church or to the Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Gail Durham, 265 Boyles St., Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the nurses and doctors for the wonderful care provided in the transitional ICU and Palliative Care Units at Forsyth Medical Center and to his physical therapist, Rick Wilson.
