| Description | : | Permelia Gallaher was born in Illinois in 1833, one of four daughters of George and Amanda (Williams) Gallaher. Her sisters, were Harriet (Bridges), Elizabeth (Brown), and Sarah (Brown). The Gallahers were of Scottish origin, who had settled in Tennessee (where Permelia's father was born), pioneered in Illinois, and were among the first settlers in Des Moines County, Iowa. George Gallaher had moved his family to Iowa Territory in 1836. He worked to clear the land and build a farm for his family.
