Read More	The Emporia Gazette, 30 May 1923, Wednesday Perry Edwards enlisted in Company H, 90th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 13, 1862, at Circleville, Ohio. The first battle in which he participated was at Perryville, Ky., October 8, '62. He was in the Tullahoma campaign, and the battles of Chickamauga, Kenesaw Mountain and Franklin; and many more less important engagements, among them being Wild Cat, Ky., Burnt Hickory, Ga., and in countless skirmishes and minor exhibitions. Mr. Edwards was wounded December 15, 1864, in the first day's fight at the Battle of Nashville, and was considered "as good as dead" by his comrades and his doctors. His lower left jaw was shot away, because, he says, he didn't catch the bullet in his teeth. The bullet took all but six of his teeth, and all of the loose part of his tongue was torn off, next to the roots. His comrade, Adam Gettman, hunted him up on the battlefield and got an ambulance to take him to the rear, where he lay until midnight on the sleet-covered ground. He was then taken to the hospital, where the doctors said, in Mr. Edwards's hearing, that there was no use trying to do anything for that man, as he was certain to die. He was carried out of the hospital and laid in the snow, to give place for more hopeful cases, and the next day was reported as dead. Later, it was discovered he was alive, his wounds were dressed, and his brother came and took him to the hospital at Jeffersonville, Ind. From Jeffersonville, he was sent to a hospital at Columbus, Ohio, and later to Camp Dennison, where he was discharged on May 30, 1865. When Mr. Edwards appeared before the hospital board as to recommendation as to what should be done with him, he asked for his discharge. The officer remarked that his injuries seemed to have affected his speech, and Mr. Edwards replied that if the officer's tongue had been shot off his speech would have been affected, too. The officer took one look at Mr. Edwards's tongue and exclaimed, "For God's sake, mark this man for discharge." For many months he could only take food through a tube, and for years his injuries gave him great pain. After coming to Kansas new tissues seemed to form, and for years Mr. Edwards announces with pride, Mr. Edwards has been able to touch his front teeth--store teeth--with his tongue. --------- The following paragraph was from a very similar article printed on 05 Jun 1930: Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, who live on a farm northeast of Emporia, have been married nearly 58 years and all of that time has been spent in Lyon County. Mrs. Edwards is a sister of George Plumb and of the late Senator Preston B. Plumb. They have two daughters, Miss Mabel Edwards, Emporia, and Mrs. A. H. Leidigh, College Station, Texas, and a son, Lewis Edwards, of Oswego. ************************************** The Emporia Gazette, 27 Jul 1925, Monday CELEBRATES 87TH BIRTHDAY Perry Edwards celeberated his eighty-seventh birthday Saturday evening with a party at his home, Elmcroft, north of town. Mr. Edwards was a member of the ninetieth Ohio, company I. ************************************ The Emporia Weekly Gazette, 01 Oct 1931 THE LAST SENTINELS The last sentinels of the Grand Army of the Republic, the soldiers who were the boys of '61, seventy years ago, are gathering from the outposts to their last bivouac on "fame's eternal camping ground." We laid one to rest Saturday in Emporia, Perry Edwards, a good soldier, a good citizen, a modest unassuming Christian gentleman who has lived the good life in this community for more than three score years and ten. His active decades, the seventies, the eighties, the nineties, were full of happy usefulness. He did is part in every civic activity. In that day he was accounted a leading citizen. He made his contribution to life with those who laid the foundations of this town and county, gave Emporia its color and direction. He lived to see the work of his hands blessed by prosperity. And now he lies down to rest, the long day over, beloved by all who knew him. Slowly the last sentinels on the outpost guarding the retreat of the Grand Army are straggling into camp footsore and weary, their hard march ended. So "he giveth his beloved sleep!" ************************************** The Emporia Gazette, Friday, September 25, 1931; p. 2, c. 3 PERRY EDWARDS IS DEAD Civil War Veteran, 93, Dies at Home in Emporia Perry Edwards, 93, veteran of the Civil war, died at his home, 624 Exchange, at 12:30 o’clock this morning. Mr. Edwards had been in failing health for several weeks, but had been confined to his bed only two days. The funeral will be held at the home Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Rev. C. L. Hovgard, pastor of the First Methodist church, of which Mr. Edwards was a member, will conduct the service. Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery. Mr. Edwards was born in Sommerset, Perry county, Ohio, July 25, 1838. He traced his ancestry to Thomas Edwards, who was born in London, England in 1757, and who came to America with his two brothers when he was a boy. Perry Edwards grew up on an Ohio farm and enlisted in the Union army for service in the Civil war August 13, 1862 at Circleville, Ohio. He served until discharged on May 30, 1865. After the close of the Civil war, Mr. Edwards continued to farm and became an enthusiastic bee culturist. He came to Kansas about 1870, and settled in the Rinker neighborhood, his sister Hannah Edwards, coming with him. Mr. Edwards took up general farming and continued his work with bees. He owned perhaps the only honey extractor in the county, and his services were in great demand for years. Mr. Edwards was married December 24, 1872 to Miss Mary Plumb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Plumb. The ceremony was performed on the farm which was their home for many years, and which was the David Plumb home at the time. The house stood on the farm now occupied by Mrs. Bertha Edwards. Mr. Edwards had brought a farm a half a mile north of the Plumb farm, and there the young couple began housekeeping. The house was furnished as Mr. Edwards’ sister had been keeping house for him. The wedding day had been set for October 8, but Miss Plumb was seriously sick with typhoid, and the wedding was postponed. A Charter Grange Member Mr. Edwards became interested in the Grange and was a charter member of the Grange organized in the Rinker neighborhood. He also accepted public responsibilities, serving on the school board and regularly attending the school meetings. At one time he circulated petitions asking for free rural delivery of mail. Many years ago Mr. Edwards joined the P. B. Plumb Post of the G.A.R. Four children, three of whom survive, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Edwards. The surviving children are Miss Mabel Edwards of Emporia, Lewis B. Edwards of Oswego, and Mrs. A. H. Leidigh of Lubbock, Texas. A son, Ralph Edwards, who lived in the Rinker neighborhood, died in 1928. Eight grandchildren also survive. They are Sydney and Mabel Edwards, of Oswego; Mary Katherine and Edward Leidigh, of Lubbock, Texas, and Harry, Betty and Mary Lou Edwards, of Rinker. Mrs. Edwards died at the farm home in 1926. About a year later Mr. Edward and his daughter Mabel moved to Emporia. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in December 1922. Mr. Edwards was the last member of his family of 13 children. He also was one of the few remaining members of the P. B. Plumb Post of the G.A.R. For many years Mr. Edwards had made it a practice to entertain the post members at his home on his birthday, and the last party for the old soldiers was given at his home last July. Mr. Edwards was the fourth Civil war veteran to have died since January 1, Adam Bitler, Thompson McCullough, J. B. Sullivan having preceded him in death. The surviving post members and friends of Mr. Edwards are Sylvester Brown, F. D. Dewey, John Edwards, Dorris Fowler, J. H. Harvey, S. L. Hoover, William Hammond, Nathan Hudson, L. B. Goodrick, J. M. Knox, J. A. Lucas, W. H. Mapes, E. R. Marcy, J. S. Marcellus, George Plumb, J. H. Ray, W. B. Smith, S. R. Taylor, F. M. Van Sickle, L. L. Simmons, S. C. Schafer, and Anderson Woodson, a colored veteran. Wounded In Service Mr. Edwards suffered many hardships in his years with the army which men of less vitality would not have survived. He enlisted at Circleville in Company H, 90th Volunteer Infantry. The first battle in which he participated was Perryville, Ky., October 8, 1862. He was engaged in successively in the Tullahoma campaign, September 11, 1863; Chickamauga, September 19-20, 1863; Kennesaw Mountain, Ga., August 31-September 1, 1864; Franklin, Tenn., November 30, 1864; the less important engagements of Wild Cat, Ky., Burnt Hickory, Ga., Bald Knob, Ga., and many other skirmishes. Mr. Edwards was wounded in the first day’s fight in the battle of Nashville and was considered as “good as dead” by his comrades and doctors. His lower left jaw and most of his tongue were shot away. After his injury he was hunted up on the battlefield by his comrade, Adam Gettman, who thereby saved his life. He was carried to the rear, and he lay all night in the snow. Next day he was taken to the field hospital where the doctors said in Mr. Edwards’ hearing there was no use to do anything for him, as he was certain to die.
