He died at Memorial Hospital, where he had been hospitalized for several days before his death. Funeral rites were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Wm. Montignani officiating. Burial was made in the G.A.R. Cemetery. Pallbearers were C. E. Hull, Dr. R. P. Glennon, Les Winsell, L. E. Weaver, L. N. Trotman and Clyde Collins. Members of the First Cavalry troop with which he served, attended the services as honorary pallbearers. They were Leo McNerney, Wessington; Harold Markey, Fred Herman, Roy Daum, Russell Stewart and Dick Clark of Huron. Others serving in an honorary capacity were Mart Davis and C. C. Walton, Dr. R. P. Glennon and C. E. Hull also served in the same troop with him. He was born October 1, 1897 at Armour, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry DeGeest. The family moved to Harvey, Iowa in 1907, and lived there until 1914, when they moved to a ranch south of Ree Heights. He enlisted in Troop G of the South Dakota Cavalry April 13, 1917, and served during the First World War, on duty in France and Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1919, and then went to Parker, where he lived until 1921, when he came to Miller as an employee of the telephone company. He worked as a lineman and later was named manager of the Miller branch. In 1943, he was transferred to Aberdeen, and then to Watertown, where he worked until circulatory illness forced his retirement in 1953. He continued to make his home in Watertown until 1957, when he returned to Miller. During the past two years he had made his home with his sister, Mrs. John Nelson. He was married March 28, 1923, in Miller, to Daisy Maud Andrews, and they were the parents of two children. Mrs. DeGeest's death occurred in 1939, and his daughter, Joan, died in 1943. During his residence in Miller he was an active member of the Isaac Walton League, Telephone Pioneers, the Lake Louise development Association and American Legion. Surviving are his son, Dr. James H. DeGeest of Miller; three sisters, Mrs. Olive Cox, Bellingham, Wash., Mrs. John Nelson, Miller, and Mrs. Helen Hoffman, Seattle; three brothers, William, Huron, Charles and Leo, Bellingham, Wash., and five grandchildren, Sally, Jill, Peter, Steven and Julie DeGeest.
