He peacefully departed from this life Jan. 20, 1971 in the Glenn General Hospital, reaching the age of 83 years, 11 months and 4 days. Father lived at a few different places in his youth, spending most of his teenage years in Texas. Then coming back to Kansas as a young man he felt his lost condition and upon true repentance and confession of his sins found peace with his Savior. Upon this confession he was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, and remained a faithful member to his end. On Nov. 14, 1909 he was united in marriage with Katherine Nikkel, sharing joys and sorrows for over 61 years. In 1938 he with the family moved to Winton, Calif., where they lived until 1953 when they moved to Glenn, where they retired. He was a kind and loving husband and father, providing well for the needs of the family, also ever sincere in his Christian walk of life, showing us by example the quiet and unselfish way of a Christian. He also expressed the joy in his heart when he would see his grandchildren repent and accept the Lord as their Savior. Father enjoyed good health most of his life. While they lived at Winton he suffered a heart attack but recovered from that quite well. Then in October 1968 he had a stroke which left his right side paralyzed, but his courage and desire to live was still strong. About a year ago more suffering came his way with a severe gallbladder attack several different times and now the last time the doctors thought surgery would be best. On Thurs. morning, Jan. 14, the surgery was done and he seemed to be doing fine until the following Wed. Jan. 20, when he suffered a fatal heart attack which took him to his home above. He leaves to mourn his deeply bereaved wife, Katherine; four children: Martha and husband Pete Martens; John and wife Lena; Ella and husband Tobias Giesbrecht, all of Glenn; and Jake and wife Sarah of Buhl, Idaho; 21 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; one brother, Daniel of Salem, Oregon; 3 sisters: Sarah Nikkel and Justina Isaac of Hillsboro, Kansas and Mary Nikkel of Inman, Kansas. Also a host of relatives and friends. One grandson preceded him in death. Dearest Father he has left us Left this painful world below And he's gone to blissful Heaven Where the fairest flowers grow. Patiently he bore his sickness Bearing pain and misery Now at rest to be with Jesus From all suffering he is free. How we'd love to have him with us Faithfully he's filled his place In the home and everywhere A true example we should embrace. In the Church a faithful brother A lonely life he lived so true Now we hope some day to meet him In those realms beyond the blue. Funeral services were held in the Glenn Mennonite Church on Jan. 25, 1971, with Min. Jake Loewen speaking words of comfort from John 14:1 and 1 Cor. 15:17-21. Interment was made in the Willows Cemetery with Min. John Wiens of Winton, Calif. in charge.
