Read More	Excerpts from Wakefield News June 1937 – Obituary of Peter Myers {copied from a newspaper article supplied by Frank Myers} Peter Myers, son of Samuel Myers, was born in Kingwood, Somerset County, Pa. Feb. 22, 1857. He died near Riley at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Parry, June 23, 1937, at the age of 80 years. When a child of six years his father enlisted in the Civil War and died three years later while returning home; leaving the mother alone with the small son and one daughter. It was then that he went to make his home with a distant relative and remained there until he became 21 years old. He then came to Kansas where he worked on a farm. His mother died soon afterwards. Several years after his arrival he married Sarah King, who died soon after their marriage. In October, 1888, he married Jane Mills, who preceded him in death on March 13, 1933. To this union were born six children: Beatrice (Parry), Leslie, Letha (Parry), Louise (Sharp), Leila (Ames), and Frank. Being born in humble circumstances, Mr. Myers did not have the educational opportunities that many young men of today have, and had to work his way through out life. Never-the-less this education of experience gave him a very important lesson, which was to work and economize. As a result, he started in as a farm hand, and by hard work and economy, fought for himself and family a fine country home; giving his children all of the benefits of a good education, and leaving his home a foundation for them. In 1928 he and his wife decided to retire on a small southern Missouri farm, but because of the love of the place where they had spent all their married life, they returned home in 1933. Peter Myers was a religious man who had learned to walk and talk with God. He was an ardent student of the gospel, living and giving of his understanding of the holy writ. He was a man loved and respected by his many friends and neighbors. His funeral services, in 1937, were held at the Congregational Church in Wakefield, with Rev. E.F.Hofer, in charge. Vocalists were Mrs. Ray Sheppeard and Mrs. Bruce Brougher, accompanied by Mrs. Edgar Siemers. Pallbearers were Ira Waino, Win. Wiese, Ed Woods, A.C. Sharp, Howard Hartzell and R.F. Randle. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery, Wakefield. Per 1870 census: living with John Marker family in PA. Per 1880 census: living with Anna Hochstetler family in PA. -submitted by Vernon, #47248868
