LOUIS STAROSTKA Memorial rites for Pfc. Louis T. Starostka were held Thursday morning at St. Lawrence Catholic church in Silver Creek with the offering of a requiem mass by Rev. S.J. Zukowski, pastor. Standing as guard of honor at the service were Sgt. Raymond Grigor, Sgt. Andrew Ciminera, Pfc. Stuart Herst, Pfc. Wayne Ashcroft, all of Silver Creek bombing range, S1/c Robert W. House and Seaman Louis Kielian, both home on leaves, and Pfc. Edwin Cieloha of Silver Creek, now on furlough. World war one veterans serving in an honorary group included M.J. Youngstrom, John Vitamvas, James Regan, Roy Kinney, Charles Kubas, James Stanczyk, and Sam Bordy, all of Silver Creek. Miss Mary Schall served as bugler. Private first class Louis Starostka was born in Platte county, six miles northeast of Silver Creek, on July 11, 1918. He attended rural schools in Platte county and in Polk county, after his parents moved onto a Polk county farm about six miles southwest of Silver Creek. He joined the Army on October 23, 1941 and after spending some time at Camp Wallace, Texas and other camps in New York, Massachusetts and Virginia, he went overseas in June 1943 to South Africa, moving with the American troops through Sicily, Italy and into France where he died on Sept. 1 from wounds received in action on August 31. On June 16, 1944 at the headquarters of the 179th infantry, he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge for having attained a high degree of combat proficiency in action against the enemy. A member of the Catholic church, he was baptized and confirmed in the same church at Silver Creek where memorial services were held for him. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Starostka, one sister, Mrs. Edmund Kontor, and one nephew, Louie Kontor, in addition to numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
