COLE Raymond F. Cole, son of Perry and Ella May Cole was born in Waynesboro, Tennessee, Nov. 30 1898, and died at Iowa City, May 22, 1931. His father died when Raymond was only eleven months old. At the outbreak of the World War, Raymond, then a lad of eighteen years, enlisted Nov. 16, 1917, in the first enlistment period. He was overseas with the American Expeditionary Forces, leaving the United States. March 8, 1918 and returning to the United States July 5, 1919. Feb. 20, 1925, he was united in marriage to Miss Clara Larson of Anamosa, Iowa. To them were born two children, Eleanor Ruth and Jean Rae. These together with his mother, Mrs. James Robertson of Monticello and a half-sister, Miss Irene Robertson, and two half-brothers, Howard and Lawrence Robertson, of Monticello, comprise the immediate family. For a period of eight years Raymond Cole worked at the Anamosa Creamery as cream tester where he was universally liked by his fellow employees. He was known in the community as a young man of sterling worth, of highest integrity, of a strict sense of honor and honesty. In his home he was a model husband and father in every sense of the word. It is probably in his home with the little family where he was best known. The entire community sympathize with the wife and family in their great loss. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. F.C. Worcester of the Methodist church, at the late home at three-fifteen and at three-thirty at the church on Monday afternoon, May 25. Interment in Wilcox cemetery near Viola. His War Record The following brief sketch is the outline of the service record of the deceased as taken from the history of the Arthur McCullough Post of the American Legion: He enlisted Nov 16, 1917, in the air service at Cedar Rapids, Iowa and was sent to Jefferson Barracks, MO, where he was assigned Serial No. 712412 and was under the command of Capt. Robert E. Lee. Nov 25, 1917 he was transferred to Kelly Field, Texas. On Dec 30, 1917 he was again transferred to Wilbur Wright Field, Ohio and on Feb. 22, 1918 to Garden City, NY. On March 8, 1918 he sailed from Halifax on the ship "Scotian" landing at Liverpool, March 18, 1918. He was in training at Cramlington Northumberland, England until Oct 23, 1918 when he was sent to Cherbourg, France. On Oct 31, 1918 he was sent to St. Mabirt, France and was on duty with the First Air Dept. On June 21, 1919 he sailed from Brest on the U.S. Ship Huntington, Landing at Boston, July 5, 1919. He was discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa, July 12, 1919 and returned to Anamosa where he joined Arthur McCullough Post American Legion soon after.
