OBITUARIES- PHILIP BENZ Philip Benz, only son of Jacob and Phoebe Lucas Benz, was born at Pawnee City, Nebr., Sept. 11, 1883, and passed away at the Pawnee Memorial hospital Feb. 7, 1066, at the age of 82 years, four months and 24 days. He was a member of the First Lutheran church of Pawnee City, and remained so until that church was disbanded. He transferred his membership to the First Presbyterian church Jan. 16, 1913, where he remained a member the rest of his life. Phil attended school in the Pawnee city schools and made quite a name for himself as a football player. He dropped out of school in his junior year to work as a blacksmith in Benz Brothers shop. On Dec. 28, 1909, he was married to Miss Imo L. Scott of Bellaire, Kans., who preceded her husband i death Dec. 26, 1961. To this union two sons were born, Ferald of Pawnee City and Gaylord Philip of Malibu Beach, Calif. Phil followed his profession in Benz Brothers shop up into the middle 1930's. Then he worked some time for Wherry Brothers assembling machinery. Finally he went to work for Callam Implement with whom he was still employed when i 147 he suffered a severe coronary. By following doctor's orders he finally was able to be up and about, and to do light work around the home. In 1953 when his loving wife, Imo, suffered a disabling stroke, Phil took over the housework, cooking and nursing. This lasted for eight long years until the day after Christmas, 1961, when his mate passed to her reward. Phil then spent about nine months in the home of his son, Ferald. About this time he decided to dispose of his home and move to the Kline Nursing Home where he remained except for several trips to the hospital until his passing. If you greeted him as "Mr. Benz", chances were he would answer you with: "This is Simple Phil.: He believed in discipline, fairness, and honesty, but he was still a backer of the school children and the school. In the past few years, he missed very few of the school games, plays and concerts. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Catherine Petrea, a nephew J. E. Liebendorfer, his wife Imo, and five brothers-in-law. He leaves to mourn his passing, son Ferald and Ferald's wife Lila, son Gaylord and wife Naomi, two granddaughters Linda and Judy, his sisters-in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. That seat in the high school auditorium is empty now, but Simple Phil's spirit will continue to hover near for a long time, encouraging the boys and girls in their endeavors. Funeral services were held at the Wherry Mortuary in Pawnee City on Feb. 0, with rev. Warren Kunkel officiating. Burial was in the Pawnee City cemetery. Pallbearers were Glenn Deweber, Clem Kenney, Francis Kreuzberg, Bob Minnick, Ervin Kerl and Raymond Glenn. Mrs. Byford Metzger was soloist accompanied by Mrs. Rex Crom.
