The community was shocked Wednesday when the news was spread about that Philip Walker had died suddenly at his home two miles south of town. He had been in town in the afternoon and seemed to be in his usual good health. He had gone home and did his usual evening work and a short time afterward passed away. Mr. Walker was an early pioneer of Elk County and was known far and wide as an enterprising business man of dependable integrity and a citizen of excellent public spirit. He was congenial and friendly by nature and numbered his friends by the hundred. He was a member of St. Mary's Church and attended its services frequently. He leaves his wife, one daughter, and five sons to mourn his departure. (The Moline [KS] Advance, 8 May 1930) ------------------ Philip Walker was born June 28th, 1853, at St. Mary's, Kentucky, and came to Kansas in the fall of 1882. February 19th, 1884, he married Anna Letha O'Daniel to which union eight children were born, two of whom preceded the deceased to the land beyond. "Uncle Phil," as we lovingly called him, was a fond father, a cherished husband, a kindly brother and the friend of all. He was a gentleman of the "old school", always showing that gentle kindliness and easy manner which one inevitably associates with the old south. But now the hand of time has stilled that generous heart's pulsations, but with us will ever remain fond memories of the old time gentleman: his kindness, his courtesy, his gentleness in life, remaining with us in death as a glorious honor to his memory. Funeral services were conducted from St. Mary's Church on Sunday afternoon. The church was crowded to capacity while many sympathizers failed to find room and were compelled to pay their last tribute of respect from the sidewalk. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mrs. Walker and family for in the passing of "Uncle Phil" we all feel we have lost more than a friend.. Beside his wife he leaves to mourn his departure the following children: Paul Walker of Kansas City; James Walker of Herington, Kansas; Joe Walker of Great Falls, Montana; Lambert, Damain, and Anna Letha of Moline, and five grandchildren. Relatives from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Walker, Hugh B. Flanagan, Mrs. Eliza Flanagan of Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. James Walker and children of Herington, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Walker, Miss Irene Walker of Wichita; Mr. and Mrs. James Dalton and son, Joe, of Paola, Kansas. (Moline [KS] Advance, 15 May 1930)
