He died on October 28, 1922 in Newcastle, NE. Here is the start of his story: It is unclear as to why the Kneifl family chose to come to the US- early accounts state that Martin & Phillip came to the US before the rest of the family. In August 1854, Martin Kneifl was aboard the E.F. Auguste departing Bremen, Germany and arriving in New York. It is not known whether Martin travelled straight to Wisconsin or scouted land elsewhere first. The rest of the family departed Bremen, Germany and arrived in New York aboard the Caroline on October 16, 1856. They then went onto the Mormon Coulee area, just to the south of St. Joseph Ridge, Wisconsin. According to the Wisconsin Land Patent, Phillip Kneifl, owned 40 acres of land in Wisconsin in the Mormon Coulee area. Times were difficult; they worked the land and fished for trout. The German population was not always viewed favorably according to newspapers at that time. Unfortunate events in the late 1850's and early 1860's motivated the family to consider Nebraska as their new home. Two brothers, Thomas and Frank, would remain in Wisconsin, marrying the Lauber sisters; Theresia & Magdelena. A sister Maria, also remained in Wisconsin, but never married. Philip married Agnes Pampin on April 30, 1867 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in LaCrosse County, WI. Phillip purchased 160 acres of land which would be located approximately three miles, almost directly west of Ponca, NE in 1868. Many of the family members dwelled in this place with Phillip as the head of the house according to the census. Phillip, Frances, their young daughter, Mary, Martin & Johanna with baby boy Frank, Johanna's mother, Anna Lerch and Jacob & Theresa Kneifl. It wasn't long before the members of Philip's household had purchased land of their own and bean farming. Phillip used to visit his son, Greg & wife Mary and eat dinner with him. Mary would always make beef noodle soup for dinner when he would come. Phillip was very strict and everything was his law and you obeyed him right now. Phillip and Frances had 9 children: Mary Theresa who married Michael Engel. Michael Phillip who married Catherine Marron Gregory James Who married Mary Magdalene Pletsch John Thomas who married Elizabeth Agnes Ross Clara Johanna who married William Alphonse Verzani Matthew Phillip who married Madalene Dreesen Anna Margaret who married John Marron Josephine Elizabeth who married Fred Heidy Johanna Frances who married Carl Feber Origin of the name Kneifl: The spelling of the Kneifl name has interchanged between Kneifl & Kneifel before the year 1800. Around this time, it became Kneifl only. Between 1641 and 1680, the only spelling was Knoeffel and Kneffel. It was also spelled Kneyffel and Kneyfl in the mid 1700's. The letter "Y" was then changed to "i". When the Czechs expelled the Germans after World War II, there were about 30-40 Kneifel families in that area as well; all of them spelled their name Kneifel. It is found in the US that the spelling of Kneifl occurs this way in ALL of the descendants of Jacob & Theresa Kneifl. Jacob Kneifl Bio: In the early 1820's two individuals would meet and marry - Jacob Kneifl, born in the years 1798 or 1801, and Theresa Kurz, born in the year 1803. To their union, six children were born - Thomas, Martin, Phillip, Franz, Agnes & Maria. (Baden, Austria).
