His parents (Charles J Miner and Kate Ann Sargent) divorced and he lived with his mother who married Percy Brown. He attended Vermillion High School. After graduating from high school, he joined the military. Miner had a nickname, Spike. All his friends in the military knew Miner very well. His parents (Charles J Miner and Kate Ann Sargent) divorced and he lived with his mother who married Percy Brown. He attended Vermillion High School. After graduating from high school, he joined the military. Miner had a nickname, Spike. All his friends in the military knew Miner very well. They said that he was a tough guy and always ready for a good fight. Miner married June Babb on November 22, l940, in California. They had one son Larry that Miner never had an opportunity to know. Miner entered active service on November 26, 1940. Joining the National Guard, he trained in Fort Ord, California, for more extensive training in field artillery. Miner was in Battery F Second Battalion of the South Dakota National Guard. He was sent overseas on November 23, 1941, to the Philippine Islands. He was on the sea when Pearl Harbor was attacked. His regiment was given a new destination and sent to Australia. After being in Darwin, Australia, and other locations in Australia for several months, he was sent to an officer's candidate school in Australia and graduated with a commission September 23, 1943. His wife received a telegram stating her husband was "killed in action in defense of his country" January 16, 1944, at Arawe, New Britain. Survivors are his wife June and son Larry. June moved to Glendale, Arizona. Larry married and continued to live in Arizona. He has four daughters and one granddaughter. A special memory his friend Ardell Hatch had is when his buddy Miner was on furlough. He came back to Vermillion to be with his family. Hatch said Miner stopped to visit the old guys to show off his lieutenant bars and was so excited to be going into action. Phillip Miner was a great soldier for America. He was always ready to fight, and we respect that.
